am I horrible for feeling this way?

DH has been blaming B's cold on him being around other sick kids.  Which may very well be true, or it may be something I picked up teaching school (I have 115+ kids), DH picked up teaching, or just something in the air.  We don't know.  It's a cold.  That's it.  His ears are clear, his lungs are clear, and the pedi said it's just viral and should run it's course over the next few days.  Give him some tylenol to help ease his pain.  He's been relatively happy considering he has the cold and he's cutting his first tooth.  He's still playing quite a bit and hamming it up like he normally does.

I feel like it's not the worst thing ever because he's sick.  In fact, I want him to have a cold here or there at this age so that his immune system builds up some defense mechanisms.  I feel like if he's sick now he will be better able to fight these sorts of things off when he's in preschool/grade school, etc...  Am I such a horrible person for feeling this way?  It's not like I want my kid to be sick all the time, and I don't want him to be really sick... but still, is the cold the end of the world???

Re: am I horrible for feeling this way?

  • I agree that run of the mill colds are not the end of the world.  As long as baby is reasonably comfy, playing, eating normally, and fever doesn't get too high, I would not even treat it.  Fever is the body's way of getting rid of the bug, so never treat a low grade fever unless the child is just miserable.  Just watch for wheezing or signs of worsening symptoms.  It is good for their immunity to have some exposure.  I also would not beat myself up over trying to figure out where he got the cold from.  Colds are going to happen, and no amount of avoidance will stop them.  Hope he feels better soon!

  • Thanks for always making me feel better.  The tylenol is more for the tooth at this point than the cold.  We've only been giving that when he's been screaming... and I suspect it's the tooth doing it and not the snot.  It's just hitting the gum and he's been chewing on his hands like crazy.

I hope this one goes away soon.  Both DH and I got it too!!!

  • Yeah, between the time she went into daycare at 3.5 months and now, she's had over ten colds. We keep things as clean as we can and disinfect all day, every day, and it doesn't help. With both of us working in schools, it's bound to happen.

I will say once she hit about 7 months, the colds really slowed down. DH thinks she finally started to build some immunity. She has only had two colds since Christmas, which is great for her. We make sure she's comfortable and we always take her to the doctor for fevers, so it's not too big of an issue.

  • You are absolutely NOT horrible for feeling this way.  It's actually refreshing to hear moms that can look at things realistically, instead of thinking they are "the worst mom in the world" for every little thing.  I think your child will greatly benefit from your attitude.  I hope he feels better soon!
  • if you are horrible, then so am i!  i didn't want to keep kat in a bubble when she was younger, and we managed to get through her first year with only one fever and a couple runny noses.
