3rd Trimester

question about pop (soda)

ok, so don't flame me please :)

In general, I have the attittude that I can bargin with myself and X won't happen to me if I do this or don't do this.

So, I have not had any caffenated beverage since being pregnant because I have been on zofran the entire time and I feel really guilty about it.  I am seriously DYING for a diet mt. dew.  I was just wondering how many of you have drank pop during this or previous pregnancies.  I know that a pop here and there won't hurt the baby, but trying to get the logical side of my brain to accept this has been hard.

Re: question about pop (soda)

  • i am a soda fiend too....and i have had one or two a day, i have cut back lately though since the dr told me i needed to drink more water, but i still have one here and there. ? i switched from diet to regular though, something tells me the aspartame cant be good for the bebe

    ?

if you want a diet dr pepper though i say go for it, one isnt going to hurt anything...i think you should be fine :)?

  • i'm still allowed my daily coffee and i enjoy it thoroughly!
  • I gave up all aspartame/fake sugars, so I didn't have any diet soda (really not hard for me since I was fairly natural food person before). However, and the reason I am writing is that I have had 1 glass of wine a week (with sips of my husbands on top of that) since 2nd trimester, which in many people's mind is morally repugnant:)

Have the soda, 1 isn't going to do anything besides get it off your mind. ?

  • I have had more soda since becoming pregnant than I had in the last 6 years. Not even a joke...

Even still...I might have a few cans of ginger ale throughout the week, not much more than that though.

  • I used to pretty much ONLY drink diet Coke before I started TTC. ?I still keep caffeine free regular Coke in the house, and have maybe one a week. ?I have a Sprite now and then at work, too. ?A few weeks ago I treated myself to the first caffeine free diet Coke that I'd had in MONTHS. ?It was delicious, and I didn't feel an ounce guilty. ?:)?

  • I also never drank much pop/soda til I this pregnancy - I tend to drink regular coke or dr.pepper instead of diet.  I've had one every couple days.  I also have a cup of coffee every morning.  I don't think I could survive without a little caffeine - I've tried before and get horrible migraines...

  • you know, they make a caffeine free mt. dew
  • I have at least 1 coke a day and don't feel bad about it at all.
  • I have probably had a soda every other day since I got pregnant.  You will be fine, go for it!
  • I have pop every few days. My midwife said it is just fine, but I should drink extra water to make up for it.

  • I have either coffee or soda (diet *gasp*) everyday.  If I'm out at a restaurant, I usually order iced tea which has caffeine, too (I get unsweetened, though);  I tried to quit caffeine and decided the headaches weren't worth it.

i had asked my OB about caffeine very early on and he told me as long as i keep it under a cup of coffee or two a day, then no worries! the withdrawal headaches wouldn't be worth it!

  • I was like you too.  I didn't have ANY with DS, even though I'm a major pop fiend.  With this baby I have really wanted some.   My friend brought up the good point about having it in moderation really isn't a big problem and if you let yourself have it you won't be dying for one.  I have probably had about a dozen pops this pregnancy.  I have quit feeling bad about it.  A small amount of sugar and caffeine once a week is not going to hurt the baby.

  • I drink it every day.  Usually try to stick with a caffeine free (either coke or Sprite).  But I crave regular fountain coke's all the time.  But I do drink a lor of water too and other juices.
  • I seriously have about a soda a day! dont feel guilty! enjoy it!?
  • I honestly don't even pay attention to caffeine anymore...but that's because I always allowed myself up to two cups of coffee a day(what my OB said) and I never drink more than that anyway, and when I drink soda, it's not near as much caffeine as in a coffee. I TRY to stay away from diet soda which I LOVE, but lately I have been sorta bad with that. I go by everything in moderation.

  • I wasn't much of a pop drinker UNTIL I became pregnant!  I've been able to keep it on the low by stealing sips of DH's pop, or buying those little chubby cans, (not sure if they are available where you live). They're probably half the size of a regular 355 ml can so they're great for a craving, but not too much pop.

  • I didn't have any soda or caffeine until after 20 weeks because of aversions to both.  Since then, I've limited myself to 1-2 caffeinated drinks (either coffee or soda).  I've had diet coke (my favorite pre-pregnancy), but I limit it to a few times a week.

  • I drink diet ginger ale, but I don't drink caffine  Just don't like the way it makes me feel and don't think that it is good for me or the baby.  If you really want one, I would go for it.  I don't think anything, except maybe bacteria, in moderation is all that bad.
  • I drink 2 cups of half calf coffee every morning and at least 1 soda per day. I just try to drink plenty of water in between.
  • I drink full sugar'd coke once a week and it's a blessing! I'd watch the diet stuff b/c of te sweetners in it. ALtough if you're only going to break down and have one, diet or no diet won't matter.
  • I've had soda every once in a while. If you want one, go ahead, you'll be fine!

  • One or two is fine. I have gestational diabetes and can't drink regular coke...so it's diet soda for me. In fact I have been told artificial sweeteners  in moderation are ok for baby by more than one doctor...obviously just don't overdue it.
