i'm thinking of going drug-free for delivery and a friend (who is also an md) suggested i use a midwife rather than an ob... just wondering if anyone here has used / is using a midwife and how you like it...
I'm using a midwife and having my baby at home.. At first I was hesitant having my baby at home (i'd rather go to a birthing center but they don't have them around here anymore) but after I met our midwife i'm really excited about it! I know a couple of women that had her deliver there babies and they loved it and said it was so much more relaxing than a hospital. She is a certified nurse and she has a doctor at Cox hospital that she calls before every birth to let him know just incase something was to happen and she could rush us there, so i'm not nervous at all..
I'm going to a practice that has both midwives and doctors and I've been really happy with them because the practice as a whole seems to be very open/encouraging to a drug-free delivery. I've also hired a doula that I think will assist me in this as well - something you might want to look into!
I hired a doula and I am really happy I did. I like my Dr. but don't feel a real connection with them plus I want to go natural too and I felt like I would need someone who knew what they were doing to help me through it. She comes for 2 prenatal visits at our house then when I go into labor she will come to the house help me through most of the laboring at home, go to the hospital with us when it is time and stay for a while after to help with nursing. She will then come during the first week to help out. I definately think it is worth it and have done a lot of research on the benefits of having a labor assisstant.
I just met with a midwife last week and WOW - what a different world from seeing the OB. The great thing is that I can still deliver in a local hospital and have all the medical back-up if anything went wrong.
I plan on receiving acupuncture during labor for pain relief, and ultimately doing a water-birth.
The appointments with the MW are also scheduled for at least 30-45 mins so that you get more personal time with them than you would at your OB's office. (At some of my OB appts I only saw my actual OB for 5 mins!)
I'd say it's definitely worth looking into. I feel like I get so much more personal attention with the MW, and she and I are totally on the same page in terms of what I want for my delivery experience.
I've been using an OB for this entire pregnancy and I've been so dissapointed. I have only seen him ONCE. He usually just has me see the nurse practitioner. I was in labor and delivery on Friday and spent the entire day with a midwife and LOVED it. Despite being so busy, when she came in to see me she treated me like I was her only patient and was just so comforting. I can't say it enough....I wish I had gone with a midwife.
I'm using a certified nurse midwife to deliver my baby at home. I had been going through a midwife to deliver at a hospital, but recently decided on the home birth instead. If you're low-risk and planning on going med-free, there's really no reason to use an OB... Check out The Business of Being Born if you haven't seen it already (and not to push home births, but I think there's some great arguments in there for midwives in general).
