poll: stretch marks?

I've been slathering my growing belly with everything from Burt's Bees to Palmers cocoa butter several times a day, but I'm still so afraid of getting stretch marks. If you have them, when did you first notice them?

And on the flip side, if you don't have them, what did you do (if anything) to prevent them?

Thanks ladies!

Re: poll: stretch marks?

  • I don't have any stretch marks (yet) on my belly--and I couldn't be more surprised because I thought I was stretch mark prone. I already had some faint ones on my butt and some more obvious ones on my boobs from gaining and losing weight over the years.

I do have some small purple spider veins on my belly, but they aren't super obvious and I read that they will go away (I hope that's true). Anyway, I have been applying cocoa butter just about everyday since I found out I was pg. But I think some of it is genetic, too...my mom said she never got stretch marks on her belly either and she never put the first drop of lotion on.

  • I've been using Noodle & Boo pregnancy products since the start of 2nd tri. I actually won the products through a contest on the Bump! They are pretty expensive on the website, but I dont have a single stretch mark ::knocks on wood::

  • I've been using Burt's Bee Mama Bee oil since 20 weeks and haven't had any stretch marks...until this morning at almost 39 weeks. It's a tiny red line and my husband thinks it might just be a string of broken blood vessels. Not sure. From everything I read, they're generally unpreventable...but it doesn't hurt to moisturize in case I guess.
  • I noticed mine right around 34 or 35 weeks.  They were very obvious for the first few months after I had DD, but they have almost completely faded at this point (almost 7 months later).  I kept meaning to use lotion, but I just never did.  They faded on their own.

  • I had a couple of stretch marks on the sides of my stomach that showed up around week 38-39 but I can happily report that they have disappeared.  I also meant to use lotion and never got around to it.

  • I never got them.  I never put one drop of lotion/butter/goo on my belly.  I drank a lot of water during my entire pregnancy.  I think it was either the water, or some women get them and some dont.  Good luck!!  Jen
  • I never got them when I was pregnant with Lily. I drank lots of water and used Palmer's Cocoa Butter. Not sure if either one of those really did any good because I've read that a lot of it is hereditary. Neither my mom nor my sister had stretchmarks.

  • I had a few at the very bottom of my belly with DD #1, and they faded.  They're back now with DD #2, I can only hope they'll vanish again.  I don't put anything on them.

  • It doesn't matter what you slather on your belly. If your mom had them, you will too. I put cocoa butter on to stop itchiness, knowing full well it won't do anything. I just got my first stretchmark a few days ago. ew
  • I did nothing for stretch marks with either pregnancy.  With #1 I got 2 tiny marks on my butt and they faded after a few months.  With #2 I got about 6 one inch stretch marks on my butt and they are starting to fade.

My sister on the other hand was obsessed with stretch mark cream and has a ton all over her stomach.  I guess I just don't understand how a cream can prevent stretch marks so I never used it.

  • I never got them on my stomach but I have a few on my boobs - they weren't used to getting that big :)  My mom never got stretch marks so I definitely think it's hereditary.  I did use lotion but I always use lotion.  I tried the cocoa butter for a bit but I didn't like the smell of it.  I just used regular body lotion.
  • I have them on the lower part of my boob but none on my belly. My boobs went through a majorly fast growth spurt during a 2 week period (at least it felt like it) but I'm still hopeful for none on my belly. So far so good. I drink water and use the cream but I've been told it's genetic. I'm happy to play games with myself. :-)

  • I was pretty good about drinking lots of water and using my belly butter every evening.  I guess about 3 weeks prior to due date I had one on the side of my belly and right at the very end I got some underneath, but they weren't the bright reddish color I've seen on other people.  Mine looked more like faded stretch marks and after my belly deflated they were faded.

  • i'll be totally honest.  my stomach looked like someone used marker all over it.  i had a ton (they are fading now).  i put stuff on as much as i could, but it was too late by the time i started.  i think i was under 20 weeks when i first noticed a few and then overnight they exploded all over my stomach.  but really, who cares?  is it going to stop your husband from loving you?  is it going to stop you from wearing a swimsuit?  it is what it is.  good luck though.
  • Mine were out of control.  The popped up the end of second tri.  I think it's genetic.  I have friends who had nothing.  All the women in my family are cursed like me.

I used Palmers twice a day

  • I have horrible stretch marks. I used Palmer's Cocoa Butter throughout my whole first pregnancy, twice a day for the third trimester. I got a few around 31-32 weeks and then they seemed to take over my stomach around 35 weeks. My mom never got a single one! I switched to Curel for my second pregnancy and got a couple new stretch marks.

  • Never got any during pregnancy and never once used lotion.  I do have some on my hips from weight loss, but those were there long before pregnancy.  My mom never had any during pregnancy.

  • I used the Palmer's belly butter and drank lots but I still got them. I did gain 50 lbs and DS was almost 10 lbs so I got really REALLY big! I didn't notice them too much until my 3rd tri but after DS was born you can definitely see them. I have them on my belly, by back, my inner and outer thighs.
  • I should also add, both of my kids were about 7.5 lbs and I gained about 30 lbs both time. I guess I just have bad luck!
