Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Belly sleeping, sleep sacks, bumpers, and SIDS ? OH MY!

Our 7 month old is proficient at rolling over, has good head control, etc.

Recently, she has shown a strong preference for belly sleeping. We decided to stop using the sleep positioner and the sleep sack - figuring that if she was going to roll over she needs to have her legs unrestricted. Now, however she gets stuck in the crib slats.

Should we put the bumpers up? Or should we "force" her to sleep on her back since back is best to age 1?

 What would you do?

TIA

  • Breathable bumpers - they have them at BRU.  And sleep sacks are loose enough to allow our DS to roll over and back, so I wouldn't stop using them in lieu of blankets.

  • we got breathable bumpers also. ?best decision EVER. ?no more stuck feet, stuck arms, or lost binkies!!!
  • we put the regular bumper on, just a few weeks ago.  he moves so much, I don't worry (ok, I do, but not enough to keep me up at night).  good luck.
  • Mine has started flipping over to her belly to fall asleep too. She's was always hanging out of the crib slats too. I agree with the breathable bumpers too.

    Expecting #3 next spring!
  • We have had a breathable bumper since the beginning.  SOO nice!

DD has never had a problem being restricted in her sleepsack, AKA sleepy-dress.  You would be busy all.night.long if you try to keep DC on his/her back all night.

  • DS wears a wearable blanket with legs...got it from one step ahead

  • If she can roll herself over, let her sleep on her stomach. And as pps have said, sleep sacks are fine. We just started using them again for DS (he hated them around 3-4 months because he had just discovered his feet and the sleep sacks got in the way), and I swear he sleeps better when he's wearing one.
  • DD loves to sleep on her belly these days as well. I think it has helped her STTN, since she has been sleeping from 7:30pm till 7am for the past month. She sleeps in a sleep sack and we have a breathable bumper as well. Works like a charm! She can still move around enough in the sleep sack to roll over onto her tummy and back.
