Another awful rash...I'm desperate

For alternative ideas. DD had an absolutely awful rash the week before last that lasted a week. She's always been prone to rash anyway, and it's made even worse in sposies (even with tons of cream), so that's not an option. It finally cleared up and was fine most of this week. Until yesterday and now it's back with a vengeance. It's SO red and splotchy and bumpy and I just know it hurts :(

She's been naked all but about 30 minutes today so she's getting plenty of naked time. When she is in a diaper, I load up on Aveeno with a liner. I tried olive oil for the first time today when I put her diaper on but then she had a massive poop.

I really, really think it has something to do with these rancid poos she's having. Because they don't flare up until she has a particularly nasty poo day.

Ideas or help, please!!!

Re: Another awful rash...I'm desperate

  • Honestly, when DD has a horrible (non yeast) rash, the ONLY thing that works is mixing Maalox and Aquaphor.  I know it's not CD safe (def. use a liner), but it clears up her rash pretty quickly (within a day or two).

  • has she been eating anything new?? DD has a really, really hard time with acidic food and those poops always make her all red - it's awful:( fruits are usually the worst - we've have some really bad incidents with watermelon, oranges, strawberries and melons, especially when she was even younger. any chance she's tried something new that might cause the icky poo?? we just slather her like crazy and try to give her as much air time as we can and it usually clears up in a day or so. if it's yeast, nystatin helps a ton, too.

We got a mixture of Aquaphor, Maalox and?hydroccortizone?(I think)?prescribed?because the antibiotics did a number. ?It cleared it up after one night.?

She hasn't had any acidic foods, actually. Any chance carrots could cause a similar reaction though? Because she had two huge nasty carrot poos yesterday, which is when it showed up. She's eating tons of solids now and it's only when she poos all day long that these rashes seem to show up.

And I honestly am not 100% certain it's not yeast. I've googled pics and it doesn't really look like it, but I'm not a doctor. I just don't know :(

  • i use the original desitin, it has a lot of zinc oxide to hel pith the rashes.  we're having the horrible burning poos from teething lately, i got some flushable liners but i think fleece scraps are working better with the desitin.

We didn't have yeast, but the doctor said if it occurred use the athlete's foot cream. ?I can look and see what brands she recommended. ?I am not sure if I would do it... ?Maybe if I was?desperate.?

  • Flame away, but a good friend of mine has a whole tube of Nystatin that she had filled for her son (a bit younger than DD) that was never used. She said I can use it if I want. Would it be worth a shot or is it bad to even consider? Since, you know, it wasn't prescribed for and hasn't been officially diagnosed? Embarrassed I'm desperate. It's bad :(

  • i wouldn't use someone else's prescription just yet.  try some original desitin, or at least something other than aveeno.  it sounds like she has teething poos...do they look like they are sunburning her skin if the poo is touching it for longer than...oh, say, TEN seconds???  that's what we have, it doesn't matter what he eats.  and when he gets the evil teething poos he poops like 7 times a day and if i miss one, it burns his poor bum really bad.

we also have been rinsing him off under the tub faucet because it hurts way too bad to wipe him.

  • I'll see what else I can find. I've still got some old tubes of Desitin and I might have some Butt Paste, but I've hidden everything away b/c I don't want it anywhere near her diapers. I have Northern Essence but it doesn't seem to do a thing for a bad rash; I think it might be good for preventative but that's about it.

I've also heard Lansinoh and breastmilk...any experience with these?

  • PS: Yes, that sounds like exactly the same poo/rash situation you're describing. She hasn't cut any teeth since Nov. though and I don't see any about to pop through either...

  • DS once had an awful rash caused by amoxicillin.  It was so bad, the poor kid was bleeding :(  Anyhow, I talked to my pharmasist and was given the GOLD of diaper rash creams recipe.  It works for everything.  I honest to God, swear by this stuff.

Mix a tube of Aquaphor with Maalox.  Equal parts.  I used a fork to stir-stir-stir and stir some more until it finally forms a past.  (You could probably use a food processor too) Store it!  It keeps.  I had the same tube for like 2 years.  (I used a medicine syring and put it back in the tube)  Anyhow, it's amazing stuff and I think everyone should have some on hand.  You'll have to use something to protect your diapers.  Every time I've used this stuff, the rash was gone literally overnight.  I think it's some sort of diaper rash voodoo.

It doesn't matter what Maalox either.  I used Cherry because it's what I had on hand.

Holy moly!  I just posted before reading replies.  I've never seen anyone use this before.  I swear by the stuff, but I think people think it's complicated to make, so they don't try it.  Anyhow.  Love this stuff and love that someone else knows it's worth :)

I didn't use hydroccortizone, but close enough.

  • FWIW, I do know of a girl (my mom babysits for her) who's allergic to carrots- and I think it shows up as diaper rash. HTH!
  • Ok, I think I'm going to try the Aquaphor and Maalox. Sounds like a cure-all and that's what we need.

Here's the dumb question part: by Aquaphor, we mean, like, the lotion? And since I've never bought Maalox either, is is a liquid? Embarrassed

  • I need this too, M is still on triple antibiotics for his pneumonia and his poor little bum is paying for it. I have tried several different creams but nothing is helping. I'm going to try the Maalox/Aquaphor mixture too! GL.

Aquaphor is made by Eucerine (sp?), your pharmacy should have an off brand too.  It's a semi-solid ointment.  I bought mine in a tube.

    The Maalox is liquid :)

  • Thank you! Looks like we'll be making a run to the pharmacy :)

  • Do you think it is yeast?

I took my DD to the dermatologist for her hemangioma and she happened to have a horrible rash at the time so I showed it to him.  He said it was yeast and to try Nystain cream, well I had been putting that on her for a week and it was not getting better.  He gave me a sample of Triple Paste AF (for athlete's feet) and seriously she had a red, raw, bumpy, open sore butt that was almost healed overnight.  All that is left are the open sores, but they are now totally healing.  Before they were open sores they were red bumps that got little white heads on them and then they popped.

  • another vote for aquaphor.  It is the only thing that works on my niece's rash.
  • The absolute only thing that helped us with this was olive oil - give it one full day and see if it helps - I did one full day and the rash was gone. Seeing as how terrible it looked I would have thought it would have taken at least a week to heal...

    Good luck!
