2+yr sleep issues, CIO failed, screaming- going crazy

For the last few weeks its been hell.  Screaming at bedtime, and then several wake-ups at night, with screaming.  Three nights ago he woke up at 2am and just never went back to sleep.

We did CIO successfully when he was 9 months old.  Since then bedtime was never an issue.  We could whisper goodnight and leave.  Now its screaming right away, and for upwards of 2 hours.  Checking on him makes it worse.  Sometimes after the bedtime craziness he'll sleep through the night- probably due to pure exhaustion.

Right now he's been crying for a little more than an hour.  My husband just checked on him and asked him if he wanted a drink of water.  My son was silent while he got him the sippy cup.  But now that he's left him in the crib, he's back to crying.

I've been hard on my husband, telling him to just DS CIO.  But CIO isn't working.  Nothing is.  I think I am going crazy.  I have been saying that for a couple of weeks now but I think I really am.  I want to run away.

What to do?

Changes at daycare:  he's sleeping on a floor mat now (not a playpen).  He sits at the big boy table (not a highchair for lunch)

We tried putting the mattress on the floor tonight for sleeping, but no luck.  He screamed at that too.

I'm grateful for any suggestions.

  • Just wanted to say that my DD went through the same thing at 24 months.  She is 33 months now and has been much better, since about 28 months.  We had to move her to a "big girl bed" at 24 months and that only made it worse.  In the end, CIO was the only thing that worked. We also turned off the monitor, so we can only hear her if she full on screams.  Monitors have only been around for 15 to 20 years, where as out house has been around for almost 100, lots of other kids where raised here and their mom's didn't hear every breath.

  • This may sound silly, but do you have any soothing music playing in his room?  We always have lullabies playing (from the day he came home from the hospital) at nap/bed time and he has been a fantastic sleeper.  Or maybe using a white noise machine?

I'm so sorry you have been dealing with this.  ((HUGS)).

  • Here are a few things that worked for my kids:

nightlight( we actually put the hallway light on a dimmer and just leave the hallway light on the lowest setting), bedroom door not closed all the way, having a "lovey" to comfort  them in bed.
