Our pedi recommended that we give DD poly-vi-sol drops for the vitamin D. I think they are making DD even more gassy and somewhat constipated. I've read that vitamin D doesn't pass through breastmilk but other than that, I don't know much about it. I'm just wondering why/if these drops are necessary and if others are giving them to their breastfed DC.

Re: BFing moms and poly-vi-sol
I give Leah Tri-Vi-Sol because she takes in less than 28 ounces of formula a day, and the pharmacist told me to use Tri-Vi-Sol over Poly because the poly has things that can bother small babies' stomachs and cause colic-like-symptoms in babies under 6 months. Try the Tri-Vi-Sol.
The Vitamin D is seen as being fairly necessary but obviously babies went a long time on breastmilk and nothing else so if your DD isn't able to handle it, I wouldn't stress it too much.
I've been giving Justin poly-vi-sol since he was 2 months old for the same reason. It's hard to get the appropriate amount of sunlight in the winter.
FYI, poly-vi-sol comes in two forms - one with iron and one without. Try giving the one without iron and see if that helps with the gassiness. If you're already doing that, then I'd probably do what teacherjess suggested.

Our pedi also recommended the Tri-vi-sol drops over the poly-vi-sol. Supposedly they taste better too. The tri-vi-sol drops are harder to find though, I had to order them on Amazon.com. Macy had major gas issues for the first 2 months, but the tri-vi-sol didn't seem to make her any worse and now she does fine. I just used mylicon prior to just about every feeding and that seemed to take care of all her gassiness.

I almost exclusively breastfed and the regular pedi never mentioned vitamins. Then one day we saw a different doc for a sick visit and he asked me if she was getting her viatmins. I said no. He said are you still breastfeeding? Yes. Are you still taking your vitamins? Yes. Then she is getting what she needs....
maybe each office is a little different?
Our Meijer keeps both Poly and Tri out, so check Meijer.
From what I can get, the new vitamin D recommendation came out very recently, which might explain the inconsistency. It is a new recommendation for adults, too. Word on the street is that Vitamin D is the new "it" vitamin for a lot of things. Still not too sure on how necessary it is but I guess I'd rather be safe than sorry?
