harness is off...but the news is not so good.

As I posted before, Lillian was in a harness for hip dysplasia.  Well, we had a follow up with the Dr. yesterday along with an ultrasound prior.  The news was not good.  The Dr. didn't see the progress he wanted to see so he removed the harness.  We go back for a follow up in four months but unless her hips miraculously fix themselves, she will have surgery around six months of age.  She will then be in casts for six weeks, they will check her and then put her in casts again for six weeks.  Then she will be put in a brace.  Obviously, we are pretty upset by this news.  I guess I knew it was possible that the harness wouldn't work but I just had faith in the odds.  I think something like 90% of the cases are remedied by the harness.

All I can say right now is that this sucks.  And I'm hoping for a miracle.

  • I'm so sorry the harness wasn't working.  I can only imagine how heartbreaking and stressful this is.  The good news is that Lillian will never remember any of this.  Although it's no comparison, that's what I tried to remind myself when Allison had newborn jaundice.
  • I'm sorry.

Four months is kind of a long time to just kind of sit and do nothing - couldn't she wear the harness in that time period or any exercises or something you could do with her?

Obviously I don't know what you are gong through but I just find it somewhat odd for the doc to not want to try to do something in the meantime of this 4 months - what if she has a growth spurt doing then that this could help.  I don't want to sound harsh to you in ANY WAY I'm giving you my thoughts from somebody from the outside that didn't get this devastating blow to them and can kind of think of these questions.

(HUGS) I will be hoping for a miracle with you guys.

  • HUGS!  I hope they correct themselves but know that we are all here for you if she has to have surgery.
Our kids are 19mths apart and we LOVE it!!

Married to my BFF on 8.13.05 (after dating 5 years)!

DS born 2.14.08. DD born 9.30.09.

  • Matilda - No way you sound harsh at all...I thank you for making some of the points you did.  Thank goodness my DH was at the appointment and was able to ask some of those same questions.  I, on the other hand, fell apart.  From what I understand, the reason the Dr. didn't want to leave the harness on is that it can cause more harm than good if it hasn't started to correct the problem after 2 to 3 weeks. DH also asked if we could double diaper (which is how they used to deal with issues like these) and the Dr. said no.  He said right now, he just wants her to grow and we'll re-evaluate in four months.  Stranger things have happened so maybe it will remedy itself...we can hope!!

On a positive note, I am thankful that it is something that can be fixed.  Thanks everyone for your support.
