NBR: If a tree man wants to be paid in cash, is that weird?

I don't have a ton of experience with landscapers/tree guys, but this guy requested that we pay him in cash.  He said he'd have his paperwork/insurance stuff when he comes to cut down the tree.  Is the cash thing weird or typical?

  • I would say typical, this way he dosn't have to claim it...

BIL owns a landscaping company and lurves when people pay him cash...

  • He doesn't want to claim it.
  • pretty common.  Most laborers prefer cash.
  • It's pretty common.  How does he know your check is good?  I wouldn't want to deal with the hassle of hunting you down and potentially going to small claims court if it isn't.
  • Also, some have bad credit/banking relationships and so don't want to have to pay to also get a check cashed...
  • Pretty common.  But before he does any work for you make sure he's bonded, etc., etc. if that's important to you.

And, fwiw, like everyone is saying he wants the income without having to pay taxes on it so if you or your DH work in a field where that might cause problems for you down the line I'd consider that too.

  • Yep, it's typical. Like the pp said, most laborers prefer cash.
