it's supposed to provide better oxygen/blood flow to the baby, but I sleep in whatever position is comfortable which used to be my back until a few weeks ago, now I go from side to side.
It allows for the best blood flow to the placenta. The right side has all your internal organs so lying on your right is not the best (but it is ok) and you aren't supposed to lie flat on your back because their is a large vein that carries blood to the baby that can be constricted by the weight of the baby.
Not sure...I sleep however I can though! Since I can't sleep on my tummy, I sleep on my right side at first, then switch to my back and then the left. I toss and turn through the night.
