Pregnant after a Loss

Vacation...would you??

Go to Mexico (specifically Riveria Maya) area when you were/are 19 weeks pregnant?  We are looking for a relaxing vacation to take for our anniversary/babymoon and would love to go back there, but we are scared about the risks of food poisoning.  I will of course speak to my dr about this but wanted to see how you all felt about it.  Am I crazy to even think about going there while pregnant?  Last time we were there we saw a lot of pregnant women laying around on the beach and it looked like such a relaxing "last vacation for a while."  I have mentioned going there to a few people who have never been and they look at me like I am crazy...so tell me what you think.  I certainly won't go if my dr tells me not to and we will book travel insurance in case of last minute changes..

Re: Vacation...would you??

  • That area is so trendy (just south of Cancun) and if you stay at the hotels or chain resteraunts you will be fine.  I just went to Acapulco, Ixtapa, and Manzinillo -- and even had frozen drinks and a coconut and mexican food.  The only thing I would advise you on is to say NO QUESO for everything -- as they use the coijita cheese you are not suppose to have.

  • I wouldn't, simply because of the water issue.  I know they have bottled water that they serve you, but you just never know if food or other things are made with "bad water."  It's not really food poisoning that you need to worry about, but the possibility of getting a parasite.  While it's probably unlikely, to me, it isn't worth it to go on a little vacation and risk going through h*ll if something bad were to happen.

  • I'm way paranoid too about the food thing... when we went to Mexico I got pretty sick even though we only drank bottled water.  Going someplace warm around 19 weeks would have been nice though- I was feeling great!  Maybe go someplace else that is warm but more "safe"?
  • I went there just before my BFP and it was great.  Just make sure that whatever resort you are at filters their water (either that or make sure all you drink is bottled). Oh, and don't get ice in your drink on the plane heading home - I made that mistake and spent some quality time in the bathroom as a result.

  • I absolutely would as long as my doctor approved.  If you are staying at a resort, you shouldn't have any problems at all.
  • i totally would go.  My DH and I got back from the Riveria Maya in early September and had the time of our lives.  We didn't get sick at all.  In fact, DH and I are thinking about going back for our babymoon.
  • You have to go! We went there for our honeymoon and stayed at the El Dorado and had an amazing time. I think about that trip all the time now that the weather is so awful here! We drank bottled water all the time and never got sick. Enjoy it!
  • Absolutely! Definitely go in the 2nd tri though. We were planning on going there for our "babymoon" but didn't get time to do so until a couple of weeks ago. We decided to go to Las Vegas instead because I was nervous to travel out of the country in the 3rd tri. Had it been earlier on, I still would have gone. Just as pp's have said, be careful of water/ice cubes and have a great time!

  • Absolutely!! We went to the Mexican Riveria and it was fantastic! Most of the resorts filter there water. Just when you leave the resort or IF you leave the resort be careful as far as the water. Have fun!! I'm jealous!!! ;-)

  • Have you ever BEEN to Riviera Maya. It's just a tiny tourist trap built specifically for cruise ships. Go to Cozumel or Cancun or one of the Florida Keys.
