Birth Stories

my birth story

My due date was December 31.  We decided to induce December 22.  A number of factors contributed to this decision-the baby seemed to measure large; my husband only had December 22-January 2 off; we had no family nearby to help us with the baby so I didn't want to chance being overdue and having no help.  Sunday night we arrived at the hospital at 8 pm.  They finished filling out my paperwork and told us to just hang out until around 3 am.  They went ahead and hooked me up to the monitor and I was having contractions about 3 minutes apart but I wasn't feeling them.  At this point I almost backed out of the induction because I wanted to do everything natural so bad, but decided against backing out.  We tried to get some sleep until 3 but weren't very successful.  I had eaten a chili-cheese coney from Sonic and it wasn't settling well.  At 2 am they came in and tried to start my iv.  The nurse busted 2 veins in my right hand before getting another nurse to do it in my left hand; she got it on the first try.  On December 18, I was 2 cm dialated and 80% effaced so I knew I was only getting Pitocin.  They started it at 2:30 am.  My doctor came in at 6 am, checked me and told me I was only at 4 cm.  I was devasted.  I thought the Pitocin would really be moving things along, even though I wasn't hurting.  He decided to break my water.  Immediately after my water broke I started feeling the contractions-ALL IN MY BACK!  I had to stay on the monitors and they couldn't find the baby's heartbeat when I sat up so I was miserable.  It hurt so bad to lay down.  Then around 7:30 am, my contractions started coming back to back and I was getting no breaks.  It was horrible, I felt like I couldn't breathe.  I went to all the birthing classes so I started trying to do breathing techniques but I could never get ahead.  They just kept coming.  The nurses urged me to get an epidural but I refused because I wanted to go natural, even though I had Pitocin.  By 8, the contractions had no breaks and were running together so I agreed to the epidural.  I had 2 nurses pushing my iv fluids through and the epidural team was there at 8:30.  I got my epidural and was sitting pretty by 9 am.  (later the nurses told me that they didn't know how I was standing the contractions and had already put a call into aneasthesia to be on standby!)  I got checked at 10 am and was fully dialated and effaced.  I was so excited!  I began pushing at around 10:30.  The nurses guessed the baby would be out by 11:30 at the latest.  I couldn't feel a thing with the epidural so I pushed as best as I could, but she didn't move down much.  11:30 rolled around and she still wasn't moving.  The dr came around at 1:00 and I was still pushing.  He said I was pushing correctly, but she was a big baby for my frame so I needed to keep pushing.  I pushed non stop until 2:30.  The doctor told me to just rest and see if the baby could progress on its on.  I was so glad.  I was so tired from pushing they were having to wake me up to push.  The doctor came back a little before 3 pm and decided something was wrong and I needed a c-section.  This was my biggest fear.  I immediately started crying but agreed because I new I couldn't push anymore.  They wheeled me back to surgery.  The epidural had worn off by now and I was in major pain.  They gave me another dose for the surgery but it wasn't working.  They ended up giving me a ton of medicine so I was pretty out of it.  The doctor opened me up and had to stand on a stool and pull to get the baby out because she was stuck so far into the birth canal.  When she finally released there was a huge click type noise from the release of suction.  At 3:37 p.m. Payton Michelle was born 8 lbs, 1 oz and 20 inches long.  After the doctor had gotten in there, he realized she turned her head and couldn't get it turned back which  caused her to get stuck.  There was no way I would have been able to deliver her vaginally.  Turns out the c-section wasn't bad at all.  I healed very fast from it.  I am glad I got induced too, because had I gone in labor by myself I would have stayed at home too long and put me and my baby in danger.  Payton had some head abrasions but they have healed.  I am so happy to be a mom.  It is an incredible experience.
