TOTTY (and other habitual nasal spray users)

I know the netti pot was suggested to you. but i also wanted to tell you to ditch the spray ASAP. it can erode your nasal cavity. I have a wicked nose whistle from years of spray use. like, for real, it sounds like a train whistle every time i breathe in.

i have an appointment in the spring w/ an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor to see if it can be repaired but i am not holding out much hope.

maybe i can start a body noise band? anybody with gas want to be the trumpet?

  • Since I don't want to start a new thread about this.... what is the appeal of using a nasal spray when you are not sick?  I personally HATE things going up my nose, so i just don't get it :)....

  • Yikes! and LOL at the trumpet comment. I used to play the trumpet (the real one). I still have gas though. Embarrassed

  • I agree. I became addicted to nasal spray when I had the flu two years ago. I literally had to wean myself off it and had withdrawal symptoms. My doctor told me that using it too much can cause serious problems with your sinus tissue. I'm sick as a dog right now, but I'm not touching any nasal decongestant spray.

I think some people are just perpetually congested.

  • Vis, i have serious sinus congestion and headaches all the time. the weather on the east coast F's w/ my sinuses something fierce. the only time i feel good is when we go to AZ once a year.

anyway, the spray itself has addictive properties. sorry i cant recall the ingredient but i think it was actually removed from most sprays a few years ago. but for me, i think it was just finally being free of the congested feeling. so i started using it obsessively becuase it would free me from the headaches.

This. I can not STAND to be congested and get those damn headaches from it. Especially when I'm trying to sleep.

  • Yeah, the withdrawal is awful, but worth it in the long-run.  My Dr. told me Afrin and the like are more addictive than heroin.  Scary.
