Early Potting Training

or Elimination Communication...whatever you want to call it...

I really want to do this. My mom just bought DS a potty, so we have the tools to get started.

I don't have any books and haven't looked it up on the internet yet (since I don't have the net yet). I would prefer to hear some tips and suggestions from moms who have taken this task on.

Any advice would be appreciated! Please help. Thanks Ladies.

Re: Early Potting Training

  • I started putting DD on the potty at 14 mths because she was really interested. My friend has been putting her daughter on the potty since she was a few weeks old, like right after a feed. She learned her daughter's cues and catches it a lot. She makes a certain face. My friend would make an "sssssss" sound and then her daughter pees. I do the "ssssss" with Leyla too, first I get her to take a deep breath and then make the "sssss" sound. She pees nearly everytime. But I know DD has to pee than.

I do find early potty training to be a bit of hard work--you constantly have to watch your child and react to their communciations. It's hard to be totally consistent if you are out in a store or something. I started having to carry a potty seat because DD was so little for public toilets, and she was telling me she had to go. I always felt badly when she told me she had to go but we were driving somewhere. Unlike an older child, she wasn't capable of giving me enough warning that she had to go. That's jsut my experience though...

  • Thanks for that perspective. I've never thought of it that way!
  • I have to say though, it is totally fun to catch their eliminations. It reinforces the fact that you can really communicate and connect with them. It's just an really long extending form of potty training, which apparently, can be done in few days when they are really ready. I spoke to a mom today who said her son was fully trained at 9 months, no more diapers...I believe her, but I also know that it was really the mom who was trained. She said he would soil himself if she wasn't there watching, waiting, reacting.
