How much does your ...

How much does your insurance cover?

I was talking to my SIL ( who is 2 wks ahead of me) and her insurance covers only about 60%.  While ours covers 100% ( with a one time $ 40 co pay).  Is it normal to pay that much?

  • I think it varies a lot between plans. You are definitely lucky! We have great insurance too, so I cant complain. We pay $250 for the whole birth/delivery/stay at the hospital. We have no deductible and we dont pay for office visits. We only paid $20 for the first ultrasound and nothing thereafter. We've had 4 ultrasounds. With my old insurance (I had with DD), I left the hospital about $2K poorer. It was still a decent insurance compared to others though.

  • Mine pays 80% but we still have a $4,000 deductible. Yuck.

  • I will pay 240 for the whole hospitalization. I switched to the high payment option (pay more each week) because it was worth it in the end.

  • Well, our plan is 100% on OB, 90% on hospital AFTER a $1500 dedictuble.  But the sucky thing is, you don't just get billed from the doctor and hospital, you get billed from every provider and that's where it bites you in the butt.

Like I got a bill from OB for delivery, OB for circumcision, anesthesia for epidural, the place that checked DS's hearing, DS's hospital stay, my hospital stay, then of course I had pre-e so I had to have a abdomen CT so I got a bill from radiology and the doctor who read the scan also.  So I ended up with about $1800 out of pocket costs when all was said and done.

  • Depends. I've heard of people having to pay up to $4000 or $5000 with insurance. Oh the other hand, this kid will cost us a grand total of about $150.

  • Ultrasounds are covered 100%, prenatal care and delivery are covered 80%. Deductible was $1000 but that has already been met so all in all I will end up paying a total of $600 to my ob/gyn. Not quite sure how much for the hospital yet though.
  • I pay $250 for the whole thing no matter what goes down once I check into the hospital.

  • Our hospital co-pay is $500.  As far as I know, this will be the only out of pocket expense for the birth.  I've only had one $20 co-pay for my OB.  I'd be happy if all we had to pay was $520!!!  We'll see though...

  • My first OB appointment is $15 after that all prenatal appointments are free. My delivery, hospital stay, etc. will cost $300, but if we want a private room its $500 a night.
  • It varies by plan and coverage in the plan.  Ours covers 100% of my stay, the babies stay, including any NICU time.

  • You guys really need to kick your government in the ass what with all the bank bailouts and such.

So glad I live in Canada. I can't imagine worrying about paying to have a baby in addition to just having the baby itself. ?

  • Before it changed at the beginning of the year they covered 90% of everything minus a one-time $35 co-pay. Now they cover 80% and I keep getting bills for co-pays for each visit. I'm going to talk to the office about that tomorrow, but I still consider it pretty good. Assuming nothing else changed that I'm not aware of and will get hit with later.?

  • We paid upwards of $4000 for DS.  I now have new insurance and will pay $250 only with this one.
