2nd Trimester

Kidney Infection (vent)

I've had a UTI off and on since my BFP.  A few weeks ago my doc ordered some lab work to be done to see if the type of UTI was resistant to amoxicylin.  After waiting forever, the lab sent my results saying that I no longer had an infection, although I still had the symptoms.  I continued the round of antibiotics as prescribed...the only problem was the lab messed up and sent my doc the wrong test results (the infection I had WAS resistant to amoxicylin).  Because of their oversight, I now have a kidney infection, and it is freakin' painful.  Tylenol is like candy, it does nothing.  I'd like to throat punch everyone at that lab right now.

*vent over*

Back to my heating pad and cranberry juice.

  • That really sucks I had a Kidney infection in the first trimester and it was a pain I feel for you.
  • Sucky! I used to get UTI's all the time. Can they give you anything stronger?

  • i don't get it-  if you have a kidney infection- why are you not in the hospital on IV antibiotics??  I have had 2 in the past 2 years and both times my urologist had me admitted right away to be on antibiotics via IV - b/c oral usually won't kill it fast enough- and you can cuase lots of damage.

also- if you are in that much pain- there is a chance you have a kidney stone - the infections i had only caused minor pain/aches... kidney STONES were as horrible as giving birth the pain was so bad. (i had stones from 30w-36w with my first pg- the worst!).

that is horrible they screwed up - please make sure to get good treatment- kidney infections are not something to play around with!!  Feel better!

  • PS - for the pain there are a ton of things they can RX you- that are safe during pg.... percocet, vicodin, etc - and if you are admitted they can give you morphine via IV or dilauded - i had both with my kidney stones (plus percocet and vicodin at other times while pg from migraines, etc) and my DS is perfectly safe/healthy.
  • I had a kidney infection around 13 weeks and was hospitalized for 48 hours because I had to have IV antibiotics. ?My dr. also put me on Macrobid for the rest of my pregnancy. ?If you are running a fever and think you have a kidney infection I would call your dr. or go to the er.

The doctor said that if my fever gets any worse then I'm to go right to the ER, but she said until then to take to antibiotics and rest.  I told my husband that if this pain gets worse then I'm going to hospital, regardless if the fever goes up or not.  As far as taking any other pain meds, her words were "I cannot advocate giving you anything stronger than Tylenol."  She's one of those kind of doctors, which is why I don't normally go to her, but she was the only doc available at the time.  But, thanks for your advice on the stronger meds.  Depending on how I feel tomorrow, I may see if I can get a prescription for something stronger.  Thanks for your advice!

  • Kidney infections suck!!  I spent two hours on my bedroom floor one night and couldn't even get up to go to the ER. (before DH)  When I finally made it to the ER, I spent hours laid out with IV meds.

I got a UTI at the beginning of this pg and dr put me on Macrobid everyday to keep it from coming back.

The heating pad was my friend and warm baths made me feel better too.  I hate to say it, but time was the only thing that made the pain truly go away.

Sorry you are having to go through this, I hope you get to feeling better really soon!!

  • Hope you feel better soon.  UTI's suck!!
