Possibly stupid question

I was reading on the mayo clinic website that herbal tea is possibly a no-no during pregnancy.  Is this only certain types of herbal tea?  It's been my go to breakfast beverage since giving up coffee.

Re: Possibly stupid question

  • Ask your doctor.  Mine says herbal tea is fine.  Then again, mine's also fine with caffeine in moderation so I drink my morning cup of coffee and sometimes, a coke in the afternoon if I feel like it.  Coke icees are the best m/s relief for me.

  • You have to be very careful with herbals as some trigger early labour. It's the same as with massage. You can't just go to anyone you need someone trained in AVOIDING the trigger points for pregnancy.

I'm sure there are reputable sites on google for homeopathy but you could also contact a midwife regarding what is safe and is not safe during pregnancy as far as herbals go.?

  • Compared to the stupid questions we get around here- this is not stupid at all!

  • Also, one of the concerns ppl have with herbal tea is that, since the FDA does not regulate herbal teas, there's no guarantee that you're getting what's on the box.
  • i've read that chamomile is OK, but I have been staying away from other herbal teas.  I have plain old decaf black tea in the morning.  i have been on a long search for decaf earl grey, but have yet to find it :(

  • I can honestly say that this is not stupid. Kudos for you doing research

  • This one is actually a point of contension. I think there are OK ones and bad ones. I'm fairly certain that peppermint & raspberry are both out, among a few others. But chammomile is OK. Just be cautious, do a little research before you drink it.
  • LOL.... Hey as long as you're not asking if you can ride a bike or go bowling, you won't catch too much crap. :)

I think it depends on the kind of tea. I don't know that there's a steadfast rule on the subject. I haven't really looked into it though.

  • Check out the "is it safe" link on my blog. There is a section on tea and I believe it rates each herbal tea.
  • Thanks everyone and JCM I will check out your blog

  • Yes, I remember reading that ...soem contries use herbs to induce labor or abortion...I think one fo the ingredients you shouldn't have is mint...that is what I recall...I've just been sticking to decaf...or the period fully caf. black tea like English Breakfast, Earl Grey and Awake....
  • Not stupid at all. For sure ask your doctor. Based on the reading I did, I decided to forego herbal tea. I've had a hard time finding nice warm-drink substitutes though ;)

I think if you and your doctor made the decision that you shouldn't drink it, it might only apply to the first trimester. Not sure about that though. One option is to not steep the tea as long. That was a suggestion in one of my books.

  • Mint tea has helped me at night with heartburn. It takes it away. I guess i better find a different solution.
