Being informed =/= good delivery

It amuses/bugs the fvck out of me that some people act like your delivery is all about whether you were educated enough or not.  Some of it is just plain luck.

If you go into it educated and informed, you won't have any surprises. You go into it acting like a dumb girl and thinking they all got it covered without any education...it might not go well.  Knowledge is power!  (I never thought I'd actually use that phrase)

Would have to agree with you!

  • While I disagree with her phrasing, going into labor and delivery after having done research and knowing more about the options that will likely be presented to you is certainly not a hindrance to a good experience.

I think you can also reconcile yourself to the expericence you did have much more easily if you are informed and understand completely what led to the outcome you got.

  • Where is this from?  And please don't tell me this is from one of the tri boards written by someone who has yet to give birth...
  • Right? I think we all know the outcome is a baby out of the tummy but everything else is a surprise. Like, I read that I wouldn't be hungry and all I wanted right before pushing was a hamburger. Or that back pain only happens when baby is sunny side up. Fvck no! I was so not prepared for that I read at least ten books just on labor!

But since I did read I knew a bunch about breathing and different stages.

  • While I agree that luck plays a role, I feel that it can't hurt to be informed.  Some people listen blindly to their doctors and don't question anything.  I think knowing why certain things are or aren't necessary can help you to make a decision on whether or not you want them (IVs, monitoring, meds, etc.).
  • i think i understand what she is trying to say.... the wording is just "off". ?being educated on your options does not mean that you are guaranteed the delivery you want.
  • You know she's going to end up with a birth that's completely not what she's planning.  I think it's bull, too.  It's luck of the draw.  I educated myself on all the positive things about delaying cord cutting, but wouldn't you know it, 2 out of my 3 kids had their cords cut right away (short cord and nuchal cord x3).  Good luck, lady.

  • I don't even understand her second sentence. I educated myself all about natural childbirth and ended up being induced and having a c-section. I'm all for finding out as much information as you can about childbirth and delivery, but I completely agree with you that being informed doesn't dictate what type of delivery you will have. Things don't necessarily go as planned, no matter how well-informed you are.
  • I think anyone familiar with my postings on this website know I am a HUGE advocate of being informed, worked as a doula FFS and had planned a med-free water birth.

But to say you will have NO surprises and act like birth is always peachy as long as you are educated is, well, ignorant.

I'm sure she didn't mean it that way, but that's how it comes across.

  • iris, I don't think I've seen anyone as educated as you going into delivery, and from what I remember your delivery didn't exactly go the way you wanted it to...being educated doesn't mean the unexpected won't occur and you'll have to change your plan along the way.

I read that differently. if you are educated and something does go wrong, then you know what your game plan is in that scenario. it doesn't guarantee the delivery you want, but it means you will be ok with the delivery you end up with, i guess.

Believe me, that is not always the case.

  • I think a good delivery is 95% luck and 5% knowledge. I had great births both times but it could have been so different if any one of hundreds of things had changed.  But the knowledge DOES help when you are faced with a tough decision in the middle of things, as you know.

  • yeah not always the case. I had a c/s for a breech baby and knew my options ahead of time, made an informed educated decision and still had a hard time dealing with the fact that I didn't give birth the way I originally wanted.

you are right, it isn't. I should have said it means HOPEFULLY you will be ok with the delivery you end up with.

I was just trying to say I didn't take her post as preachy. to me it was no different then when you advocated education and natural methods before your delivery.

Like I said, I'm sure she did not mean to come across that way.  I did advocate those things before, and I still do.  But I certainly hope I never said "no surprises."   From my experiences in L&D, I don't think I would have said something like that.

To those who asked, she already has a child and I don't think she is talking out of her a$$.  I just think this post came out wrong.

If you had an easy delivery for your first child, it's easy to assume that people who didn't have one may have not done things "right."

Um, right? ?I didn't take classes either. ?I read 2 books but nothing can prepare you for childbirth except already having gone through it, IMO.?

    ?

BTW you look amazing after just giving birth!!?

  • ITA.  It IS important to be informed and knowledgeable, but when it comes down to giving birth all of that really meant squat to me.  There was no way that I could prepare for what came.  There were points were I would have gladly chosen death over the pain I was experiencing, and no amount of books or childbirth classes changed that one iota.
  • that is a recipe for disappointment.

i was educated & pretty well-informed, and there was a surprise at every corner.

  • I didn't really want to know anything and I had an awesome experience.  Woman have been doing this for God knows how long.  You don't need a degree for it... the baby's gonna come out. ;)

  • I assume she just means that you'll have a better understanding of what's happening to you if you are educated (aka "no surprises").  I agree.
