Baby wearing mamas, I gotta ask. . .

Doesn't it hurt your back to wear your baby?  I have a plain old infentino carrier that someone got us and I'm terrified to use it because I have really bad back pain as of lately (probably from carrying a 7 month old around).  At what point to you wear them on your back, if you even do that?  I iz skeered.  Smile

  • I use both the moby and ergo baby carrier I too have a really bad back and these two choices were the best to avoid back pain.

Out and about Ergo at home Moby wrap.

  • I tried the cheaper carriers and yes, they hurt my back. I upgraded to an ergo and love it! I haven't been brave enough to try wearing DD on my back, although I'm sure she'd be fine and love it. I don't even think I could do it by myself, I'd need DH's help to get her on my back!
  • A good quality carrier should not make your back hurt when worn properly. I have had lower back issues since I was in high school and I carry my 16 month old 30 pounder with no problems. When I hip carry him for a long time sometimes it starts to strain my neck but it's more of a tired muscle thing then persistant pain. It's just because he's so big at this point that that particular carry isn't as useful. I never had problems carrying him when he was an infant in front carries or when he was older on a hip carry and I still have no problems carrying him on my back in my wrap or in my ssc. I know that some back carries are better for people with bad backs too. I think it just depends on the carrier and the carry.

I have heard that some of the more mainstream carriers like bijorns and infantinos aren't as good on your back as more of the specialized carriers that are out there - but I have no experience with this.

  • Infantino carriers can and will hurt your back and neck.  The carriers we use are ergonomically designed for weightless comfort.

  • Not at all!  I have found that holding her without a carrier hurts more.  I have only tried the back carry once.  DD did not like it, but I will try when she gets bigger.

  • Where would one find an Ergo and are they rather expensive?  When you say Out and about, do you use it implace of a stroller?  How long can you wear them for before they get, um, ancy and want out?
  • A properly designed carrier won't hurt your back at all!  I've carried DD in my Papatum around the fair all day, through an airport cross country by myself, etc. and never had any back issues.  DD would probably live in the carrier, if she could. LOL

  • I have a bad neck/upper back, and I haven't had any difficulty with my Moby - I have had some pain from my peanut shell sling, though.  DH has been very happy with our Pikkolo - a lot like an Ergo, but you can carry DC facing front - he has a terrible back.

There are a lot of stores online that sell them. Do a google search. I bought mine from a nestie so I don't have any specific store recs. And yes I use it when grocery shopping or whatever in place of a stroller or cart seat. I also used it while in Disneyland (a lot). DD naps in it and just hangs out, but she can go for at least an hour, maybe more, depending on her mood.

  • I have a VERY bad back.  As long as I use a carrier and not a sling I am okay...but I am best if I use a Moby or the Ergo.
  • Okay, cool.  Thanks ladies.
  • I wear the Bjorn active, which I think offers very good support, and the Hotsling, which at this point, makes my shoulder achy if I wear her for too long.
