What does the Stimulus Bill mean for individuals/families?

How will it effect us?  I'm not good at reading political/economic jargon.  Can anyone put it in layman's terms for me??

Re: What does the Stimulus Bill mean for individuals/families?

  • Nothing.  I don't think it's going to help much at all.  What they should have done was divey out that multi billion dollar package to the american people and let them stimulate the economy.  I have a feeling that most companies that are receiving money from the stimulus package are going to go out of business anyway.  At least the american people could have been out spending that money keeping people in jobs and businesses from going under.  I'm sure that idea is filled with flaws as well but it sounds good!

  • It's going to be further debt you and your children and maybe your grandchildren have to pay through taxes.

Awesome right?  It's a huge clusterfuck of spending that won't stimulate the economy.

Honestly, I hope I'm wrong and that it will work, but I really don't think it will.

    ditto.

  • I was all for the stimulus but its not looking good as for as I'm concerned. I agree that they will probably invest too much in companies that will eventually fold.

I think they should've done more with banks/mortgages to help lower rates.

I'm not seeing much good form this. We'll see.

  • I thought I heard something about $1,000 tax cut for couples.

Hey, don't spend that $20./wk all in one place now!

  • Some highlights:

    1) Officials estimated it would mean about $13 a week more in people's paychecks this year when withholding tables are adjusted in late spring. Next year, the measure could yield workers about $8 a week.

    2) Millions of people receiving Social Security benefits would get a one-time payment of $250 under the agreement, along with veterans receiving pensions, and poor people receiving Supplemental Security Income payments

    3) An additional $46 billion would go to transportation projects such as highway, bridge and mass transit construction; many lawmakers wanted more

    4) A $15,000 tax credit for anybody buying a home over the next year was dropped; instead, first-time homebuyers could claim an $8,000 credit for homes bought by the end of August. Car buyers could deduct the sales tax they paid on a new car but not the interest on their car loans.

  • ditto eclaires!

    it's so depressing

  • Basically it is imaginary money. Your kids and grandkids will be paying this money back forever.

    Thanks Obama!!

  • As usual eclaires is right, what a way to start out loving Obama already!
  • I believe couples get $800.  Its more of a stimulus package to help create jobs and help state's balance their budgets-especially states that are running out of unemployment benefits like mine.  I don't think anyone wants to add to the deficit, but unfortunately doing nothing could be catastrophic and irresponsible.  We have to do SOMETHING.
