Sushi....

Hey All....I am so obsessed with sushi and obviously have not had anything since pg.  This week went to sushi with a friend and i had two rolls:

one with real crab meat and oldbay mayo with avocado

another with tempora shrimp and avocado

Now i realize i can eat this but how often would be okay?  Ever since I had it- having it again is all I ever think about now!!!!

TIA

Re: Sushi....

  • Read up on the seafood guidelines for pregnant women, or ask your OB.

  • OK, that looks like cooked seafood.  You should be OK. You need to be carfeul about the RAW seafood.
  • Talk to your OB about it.  Different OBs have different views.  Mine lets me eat sushi (provided it comes from a reputable place, looks good and smells fine) but he's probably not the norm.

  • I ate raw sushi at least once a week when I was pg. ?My OB OK'd it.

  • And that is not  true sushi, btw.
  • Hmm that is interesting that your Doc allows that....sweet!!

Every website I read too seems to tell me something different so I will check with my OB.

    Thanks ladies!

  • I would call your ob to find out what their fish guidelines are.  However if they are cooked (liked the shrimp tempura) you are fine.  It is the raw fish you need to watch out for.

Mine said the same thing, plus not more than once or twice a month.  She said if it comes from someplace I trust and frequented before getting pregnant, looks/ smells good etc it's OK. I haven't had any yet, but DH & I are probably going to soon.

  • My OB also said I can eat all sushi, including raw, as long as it comes from a reputable place. Fish used for sushi is either extremely fresh or (more commonly) flash frozen. Because by definition sushi fish has to be extremely fresh (otherwise you wouldn't want to eat it under any circumstances) there's little chance that listeria has time to grow there. Listeria is a very slow-growing bacteria which is why there's a lot of concern about it in things like cold cuts which tend to be around for a long time.

But that's one doc's opinion and clearly the many guidelines you read elswhere say otherwise. I've eaten raw sushi twice since I got that advice, though, to no ill effect.

  • I eat Raw Sushi once a week. My doc was fine with it. YOu need to check with your doctor
  • I was sooooo HAPPY when i read this post! i've had a craving for sushi for my whole pregnancy, but swore it off, thinking it was the worst thing i can eat, along with lunchmeat...so i already told my fiancee that we have a sushi date for this summer once the baby is born...BUT after reading this i read the 2 types you had. the tempora shrimp and crab meat and thought they cant be bad for me because i eat those 2 seafoods now plus calamari... so i called my OB ... and got the OK... looks like our sushi date got bumped up 4 months!! :0)...so you just made a fellow PG's day!!! Thank you!!

  • Daily if I had my choice. The amount of fish in sushi is so small compared to the amount that you can eat daily/weekly.

    You're fine. Nom nom nom.
