taxes and deductions for your children

what things are tax deductible for your kids?

this will be our 1st time filing with mady. last yr while i was pregnant i remember our acct mentioning that the rules have changed and we can no longer add diapers, formulas or things like that as deductions. im not really sure...i was about due and i wasnt paying too much attention to him.

we've seen him for years, but if need be we'll see someone else if deductions are to be calculated wrong

    Maybe your acct was talking about FSAs and using that to buy your diapers and formula??? I don't have one of those but I wanna say if you do you can't deduct that since FSAs aren't subject to taxes since its coming out from your check. If you didn't do that then you should be able to add up all of the taxes from all of your receipts for EVERYTHING you've purchaed last year and deduct the sales tax (if its higher than the minimum the govt sets).  At least that is how we've done it the past few years.

    You can deduct childcare expenses but I'm not sure what the rules are for that, like if it has to be a center or if it can be an in-home daycare/nanny.

    i don't think you ever could deduct things like formula and diapers. we did our taxes already with Turbo Tax which is pretty thorough and there wans't any place that allowed you to deduct for baby items. You can deduct for childcare if the person providing the childcare is claiming it as income.

    Wej ust did our taxes last night at H&R Block and they gave the $1000 deduction which we expected and another $300 that we didn't even know about. They asked if we had childcare services (which we don't right now) and they said that was the only thing that could be deducted. GL!

    The extra $300 was from the stimulus rebate they did last year. Anyone who had a baby last year should be getting it. Its in addition to the amount you should have received earlier in the year. We got the additional as well which was VERY exciting!
