Let's talk about potty training...

Ava will be 18 mos. this month and is showing signs of readiness.  She will say "I pee" either when she is peeing/pooing, will sit on her Elmo chair and say "potty" and will bring me her wipes if she has a dirty diaper.  I know I should follow her cues instead of an age, but I have had 24 mos. in my head as when we would start.  I don't know why.  Just curious if you are potty training/have potty trained, when did you start?  I don't really want to start right now - I realize she is interested and I'll encourage that, but I think being interested and actually doing it are two different things.  I really don't think if we actually started potty training that she would get the hang of it right now.  I would also like to use regular potty training pants instead of pull-ups (except for at night and while we're out I guess), so this is another reason I think we should wait.  I feel a lot of pressure to start potty training though.  Family members are making comments like "it's time for mommy to buy you a potty chair."  Now I don't really care what they think, but I also don't want to ignore what they're saying or ignore Ava.

Re: Let's talk about potty training...

  • It is different for boys than for girls. Kellen was 2 1/2 when he showed signs. We bought all the stuff and then he dropped it (I should state that his bio mom did not want anything to do with helping him to be potty trained). He was potty trained a little after he turned 3. One day he just decided that was it. I would probably get a chair for her and see if she is really interested in sitting on it, but I would not push it. Remember you will be having another baby shortly and Ava may revert back to wanting to be the baby. Sometimes if you just potty trained them they will tend to not use the big potty anymore and want diapers on b/c "they want to be the baby".  Ava will always be your baby, but now her "baby" role is being replaced by a new sibling. Good Luck!! It is hard, but very rewarding for both child and parent when it happens.

  • Avery was potty trained at 18 months, but I think a lot of it had to do with daycare.  She was the youngest in her class and all the other kids were 2 - 2 1/2.  She would see them going (and getting an M&M as a reward) and she started refusing to wear diapers.  She was also able to tell us before she needed to go.  We switched to underwear during the day and pull ups at night.  You could always give it a try and if she's not interested put the potty away until later.
  • YIkes! The thought of potty training makes my head spin. Ava is showing more signs of readiness than Ryan. All she does right now is hide when she is pooping then she comes and stands right in front of me and I ask her if she poo-poo'd and she walks to the steps to go get changed. Like Becca was saying, I have heard that they can revert back after a new baby comes. For that reason, my dr just recommended yesterday (when I told her I was expecting) that we wait until after the baby is born to start potty training. Plus, we are hoping to be moving to a new house by then (crossing our fingers that ours sells) so I don't want there to be too much change at once. If you think Ava is ready (it sounds like she is) then I say to go ahead and see how she does.

  • Eli is starting to get interested too.  We bought a M-elmo potty seat that fits into the normal toilet seat for him.  We ask him if he wants to sit on the big boy potty.  We ask him if he has pooped and he will pat his butt and shake his head the appropriate direction.  We aren't forcing it, because he is still young and I definitely don't want him to be scared of the big boy potty.  We also will let him sit there as long as he wants to (which isn't huge amounts of time) and read a book with one of us to encourage him to sit on the big boy potty.

  • we started Morgan at this age but it was mostly for day care reasons. She LOVED sitting on the potty so we would randomly put her on it (with her special seat) and let her stay until she said she was done. She normally asked for a book and would sit for close to an hour if we let her. :)
  • CRAP!  I was certain you all would say 18 mos. is too young, lol!  Oh well... maybe we'll give it a try in a few weeks after I get used to the idea and read more about it.  I will admit that I have had her chair picked out for a couple months.  I think this one is super cute:

  • Nora has shown the same signs of readiness as Ava. I have a potty seat that snaps on the toilet. This weekend I plan on getting her a chair (I've been looking at the one you posted). She loves sitting on the big potty but I think we'll have more luck with one she can sit on her own.
  • We bought Niko's potty around that age.  He was exhibiting similar signs like telling us when he was going #2.  He kind of got uninterested and now is back into it again.  I kind of want to follow the Dugger family philosophy...teach them how to remove their pants, then they can learn to go potty.  We are working on that :)

  • No suggestions on when to start, but I did buy that chair and it is super cute :)  I saw it yesterday at Walmart for a few bucks cheaper.
