Re: interview w/ pediatrician - questions?

  • Here are some that were important to me:

Vax options - I didn't want to have to battle or get looked down on for following my own schedule.

    Opinion on antibiotic overuse

Support/opinion on BFing (my pedi & nurse are actually lactation specialists - I lucked out!)

    Office hours

Calling after hours - are there any charges?  How long does it take to get back to you?

Can you get in for a same day appointment with a sick child?

What specialties does the pedi have?

If you can't see your regular pedi, will you see another from the practice?

Just general information on the practice (how does it run/when do you call for app'ts (ours you generally call 1-2 days beforehand, a bit odd, but it works)).

HTH.  I'm starting to forget what I asked at my meeting with our pedi - it feels like it's been so long...

  • 1. What is your policy regarding breast feeding support?

    2. Do you support alternate vaccination schedules?

    3. What happens if we need to call after hours?

    4. How quickly are phone calls returned? By whom are they returned?

    5. If I need a sick child visit, can I be seen same day?

    6. Do you have weekend hours?

    7. Do you have priveledges at any nearby hospitals?

    8. When do yo normally recommend starting solids?

    9. Do you charge for phone consultations?

  • Overall it was really the feeling I got from our pedi and nurse that sold it for me - I actually love all the doctors from the practice that I've dealt with.  It was really important to me to have someone who I felt comfortable asking all sorts of questions, someone who I felt wouldn't brush me off or make me feel rushed.

I have to say I agree with this. We had narrowed it down to 2 options based on insurance and recommendations from friends. One made us feel completely welcome and took the time to give us thoughtful answers to the questions we asked and one did not. Even though I wasn't 100% thrilled with all the answers they gave, they were at least able to give me reasons and take the time to talk with me.

  • weekend hours? ?

    good luck...who are you interviewing??

We went to see Dr. Sells (Intown Pediatrics).  She seems really nice.  I think we're going to go w/ her.  She supports bf'ing (they have a lc come in every third saturday for a bfing group!), supports delaying solids till 6mo, is OK w/ delayed/selective vax and tolerates non-vax, though she supports the regular vaxing schedule.  Mostly she just seems really chill and all about parents' choice, you know?
