What age did/will you put DC into "big kid" bed?

S was two in October and we're deciding whether or not to move her out of her crib. MH is pushing for it, but I don't really want to tempt fate and think we should keep her in her crib for as long as she'll stay there.?

I know a lot of people on here had to move their toddlers to use the crib for a new baby, but that's not going to be an issue here :-)

So, how old was your DC when you moved them? Or what age are you planning on moving them if you haven't already?

Thanks!?

  • She climbed out of her crib on the lowest setting at 15 months so we moved her! It was such an easy transistion.

  • Miles was 2.

Emilia we will keep her in her crib as long as possible. We have a crib tent. I hope to keep her in it until she is at least 3.

  • DD was 20.5 mos. I wanted to keep her in MUCH longer but she climbed out, so I felt it was no longer safe. It actually wasn't bad - a few late nights and she was fine.

I personally would wait until DD no longer seemed happy or was too physically big for the crib. If it's not broke, don't fix it!

DS didn't try to climb out, nor did he ever complain about being in a crib. I was more comfortable with him being in there b/c I knew he was safe. The only reason I took the front rail off in December was b/c I was on lifting restriction and it just made things easier for him to be able to get in/out himself. I put on a bedrail in place of the crib rail for safety and even though he can, he doesn't get out unless we come in there to get him.

Personally, I don't understand why some people change so early if the child isn't trying to climb out, complaining, or otherwise hindered by the crib. ETA: or when the crib isn't needed for another child

  • We moved DD at 2.4.  We will use the crib for #2 and wanted to give her time to adjust before the baby.  If we were not having another, I'd have kept her in there until around 3.  She never tried to climb out or anything and slept really well in it.  The transition was fine for her though.  She loves her bed and sleeps just the same in it as in the crib.
  • Not until a few months before I need her crib for another DC. Which, like you, is not on the cards yet, so she'll be at least 3 I think. Unless she starts climbing out or something.
  • If there's no reason to move her (no new baby, not climbing out, not complaining) then I wouldn't move her.

That being said, we moved R just shy of 20 months b/c she was climbing out.  It was tough for the first few days, but overall, not horrible.  She adjusted fairly well.  But, I would prefer that she still be in the crib.

  • DS has been in his bed for 3 weeks.  He is 26 mos.  I'm due with #2 in 3 weeks, so we wanted to transition before the baby comes.  He never tried climbing out of his crib.  So far, so good.
  • 2 yrs 8 mos...went into a twin bunk bed, sleeps on the bottom w/ a safety rail.

  • DD#1 did at just about 2yrs old.  DD#2 did at 1yr, 9mo.  DD#2 did better than DD#1, I think it depends on the kid.

  • We never had any problems with DD climbing and I didn't want to deal with having to put her back in bed a million times or anything like that so I just kept her in her crib.  I finally converted her crib to a full sized bed about a month ago - so 33 months old.

  • I love DD's "baby jail" :)  It keeps her safe, she doesn't attempt to get out of it and it gives us a place to put her for her longer punishments.  I hate to think what she will do when given the freedom to roam.  She's bad enough with my constant watchful eye..

I think I'll keep her in it until it is just no longer feasible...like 7? ;)  OK, probably more like 4...

  • I'm holding off as long as possible.  DD has fought sleep from the day she was born.  It would be a complete disaster if she had the freedom to get up and play.
  • DD was 18 months and she did great.  Since the 1st night we put her in bed awake, tell her or read her a story and she goes to bed on her own within about 10 minutes.  We have rails on both sides of her bed.
  • We only switched DS when he was 2.5 years old.  He never tried to jump out of his crib and seemed happy so we never bothered until then.
  • My DD was also 2 in Oct. We moved her to a twin bed at Christmastime. Our reason was moving to make room for the new baby. Otherwise I don't think we'd have moved her yet. Why fix it if it isn't broken?? Smile
