Nanny Cost - Would you pay this?

I have a lady who wants to interview for our nanny position.  She will be moving around the corner from us (less than a mile away) and is willing to work 55 hours a week for 2 weeks and then however many (probably 30) for the time DH is home.  She'll also clean the house (scrub, laundry, etc) and run errands.  She is asking a flat rate of $500 per week for both kids and the aforementioned extra duties.

This is only about $100 more than I'd be paying for daycare for 2 and I wouldn't have the added 1.5 hour commute to and from daycare and the office plus, I wouldn't have to get up super early to get the kids ready or stay up later getting their food ready.

I am feeling like it is a no-brainer.  However...

My boss had to let his nanny go for reasons not related to her. She only wants $400 per week for the aforementioned duties.  The caveat, she is old school in her ways of thinking and doesn't always listen to the parents, but not on super major things.  It would be more like convincing my Grandmother that things have changed if that makes sense.

Gah...I don't know what to do.

  • I would see if your DC connects to one better than the other and go with that.  It would bother me if someone that I paid to watch my children didn't listen to me though, but i'm a control freak about things like that.

  • I agree with pp, who do you like better?  I mean, it is a $400 diff but if the more exp nanny is better fit than its worth it.  Plus, sounds nice to have her so close to your house.
  • i'd go with the 1st one. the last thing you want is to be butting heads with your nanny. period.

  • Will she be consistently working 30 hour weeks?  If so, I think $500 a week seems quite high.  That is nearly $17 a hour.  I would find someone you totally jibe with, that is what is most important.

i think she'll work 55 the 2 weeks H's DH is offshore and then 30 hrs for the alternate week he is home...

Probably not.  DH will technically only be home 7 working days out of the month.  The other days she'll be there from 7 a.m. until 6:15ish p.m.  The days he'll be home, her hours will be closer to 9:00 - 3 or 4.

There are a couple more people we are interviewing, but for some reason, these two are sticking out to me.  Mostly the first one.  I really want to steal a friend's nanny, but that would be very, very bad of me.

  • With an infant, a toddler, and errands/cleaning  $500 sounds reasonable. Are you going to give her a gas allowance?

I wouldn't go with someone you have to argue with.

If she is going somewhere for us or taking the kids out, I will provide a gas allowance.  I think it is only fair.

I agree and go with your gut.
