I just re-watched the clip from Dateline. It said "but she did suffer a lower back injury which left her unable to work. She eventually began receiving disability payments.."
There is also a statement later in that she also used a lump sum of inheritance money with which to pay for her IVF treatments.
Re: The octo-mom and her disability
she was a nurse, they need to be on their feet, if she has a back injury, she can't do that and that's her occupation. Yes, she can go get a desk job but they have to pay her for the job she was trained for which she can no longer do.
Lower back issues....hmmmm - don't you think it might be a tad bit difficult to carry EIGHT children with a Lower Back Injury??? COME ON!!!!!
Makes me gag!
Ok. I work in an O&P clinic. We make back braces, etc.
1. There are a crapton of braces she could wear that would make it so that she could work. 2. also lots of surgeries to correct lots of thing to make it so she could work. 3. even if she couldn't do her old job, there are PLENTY of jobs she could be doing instead. Not that the market is great right now, but still. 4. If she's unable to work, she would be also unable to care properly for her 6 children under the age of 7, much less carry 8 babies without being on bedrest the entire pregnancy, at best.
Speaking from the point of view of someone who sees back injuries almost daily, that is.
I won't even get started on the whole blowing her inheritance instead of housing, clothing, or feeding her children bs.
Now that makes more sense, well a little anyway. That's exactly what I was trying to get at in my other post. There's got to be some little thing like that that I wasn't understanding.
I understand what you're saying, Obviously if she can carry around 8 babies, certaintly she can work! But, I don't think that's how workers comp is designed.

This is what bugged me:
Suleman had told NBC News correspondent Ann Curry in an interview that she was not receiving welfare. Furtney said Suleman didn?t consider the food stamps and SSI to be welfare.
?In Nadya?s view, the money that she gets from the food stamp program ? and the resources disabilities payments she gets for her three children are not welfare,? he said. ?They are part of programs designed to help people with need, and she does not see that as welfare.?
Call it what you want, lady. It's welfare.
If that's not welfare, then what is??
SSI is not welfare. It is government support for disabled people. There is no income requirement. My friend gets it for her severely disabled DD, even though they make $200K+ a year. My friend uses it to pay for some of the special therapy her DD receives (it doesn't go very far.). Her DD will likely get it her entire life.
I do not understand how a person who is too disabled to be a nurse in a phyc hospital is able to find a doctor who was willing to declare her healthy enough to implant 8 eggs into her. Crazy. I would like to know who and where this guy is because he should be locked up (I guess it could be a woman too.)
