Do you always empty DC's poop into the toilet?

On another board there was a discussion about cloth diapering and posters were saying that even with disposables, you should always flush poops because it's really bad for the environment not to. Supposedly it's "all over the disposable diaper packaging" although I've never seen it on my Huggies boxes. It makes sense but I've never done it (except when trying to get DD interested in the potty).

Re: Do you always empty DC's poop into the toilet?

  • If i had a bathroom on my main level I may be more inclined to, but since both of our bathrooms are upstairs and the majority of diaper changes are downstairs, I'm not running up everytime to empty the diaper!

  • I do, but only because it keeps the trash a little less stinky. I have never seen a diaper box that said to dump the poop.

  • I voted never, but I have seen it on the packaging.
  • I have never heard of such a thing.

  • It is on the packaging of some diapers to empty "solids" into the toilet.  It isn't necessarily easy to find, and it often isn't on the large boxes.

I empty really bad diapers into the toilet to avoid smell issues.  I also use cloth part time, so those definitely get emptied into the toilet.

  • I never did.  And I never recall seeing that mentioned anywhere on a box of diapers either.

  • I read this on another board and thought it was a little strange, actually. I get that it would make things less smelly by doing it, but it seems like a lot more work, especially if you don't have a bathroom close to the room you are changing the diaper in.

Yes, it would be more work. But the point is for the environment, since waste emptied into the toilet can be treated, but once it's in the landfill, it seeps into the ground, rivers, etc.

  • If I wanted to dump poop, I would use cloth.

Not dumping poop is one of the main reasons for my using disposables!

(PS -- I don't recycle either!  Yes, I know --- for shame!  But if I don't recycle, you can imagine that I'm NOT going to be dumping poops in a toilet!)

  • Ditto this.  Although I do recycle but that's only because we're renting a house now and the town we live in provides a can for it and picks it up weekly.  Before that I didn't recycle either.

  • Most of the time I do.  I've never seen it on the box, but I've never looked for it either.
  • I've seen it several times on the packaging actually. I have never done it.

Frankly, with DS2, it would be impossible to dump anything into the toilet - it's not solid enough.

  • Someone who I know that cloth diapers told me the same thing.  That said, lets just say I don't know how you would even do that (particularly with a newborn).  I never do it and I avoid the smell issue by double wrapping dirty diapers in grocery store plastic bags before tossing them.  I guess I'm not very green.
  • Just about always.

When DS wears disposables, I dump the poop into the toilet almost every time. One, it's habit from using cloth. Two, I thought it said so on the packaging!

Now I say "almost always" because all pebbly or play-do like poop goes in the toilet. Anything peanut butter or softer will have to just get tossed. Basically it has to be able to "peel off" the diaper before it's flushed! LOL it's not really gross to me since I'm so used to it from using cloth!

  • She is PT now, but when I started putting her on the potty at 18 months I did start this. Big girl poop is stinky and yucky and I didn't want it in my house. It was a great way to show her that poop goes in the potty. It was very easy to do except when it was stuck on the diaper :)

I never heard of the environment issue.
