Probably about 6 months. ?A couple years ago someone told me they gave their kids a traditional sippy without the valve in the bathtub filled with water. ?This way if it spilled all over them it didn't matter and they learned to use it. ?We went to the straw sippy cups about 9 months.

like alisa and charlotte, we started at 6 months. she had shown interest in my cup (with a straw) so I gave her a sippy with a straw and she took to it right away. we only put water in it.
We gave her valved sippies starting at 7 months or so (just with water), but she had no clue what to do with it until I gave her a Nuby straw sippy...and that wasn't until 10 months or so.

We must have the same kid.
Me too. Charlotte isn't quite as adept as she needs to be with the regular sippy (or she's just being lazy - she still likes someone to hold/tip it up FOR her!), so I'm thinking about switching to a straw sippy.

Mine didn't start until about 9 month's and then (and since) he will only take the Disposable type (that I don't dispose of) that you get at the grocery store with the lid that fastens on...
5 or 6 months. She couldn't figure out the valve so I went with a disposable first years like a pp and punched a hole in the lid to make it easier (didn't need quite as much suction).
Straw sippy a few months later and only for milk to help distinguish the two.
