Did anyone else watch Dateline? I don't understand why some people are so cruel and evil. Leave the women alone! Was it the best time in our economy to go having 8 babies. No! But she didn't think she would have 8. She didn't think she would even get one to stick. She's not taking welfare. She's trying to finish school. So let her do her thing. No one tells the "Dugger" mom that she should die and that she should have her kids taken away! and she has what 17+. I just think some people comments about how she looks or that she's a bad mom. Come on at least make an intelligent comment like, it's hard these days to support that many kids. Have legit concerns not how she looks. I just hate how mean and judgmental people can be. Sometimes people make the most ignorant comments. Trust me I know all about people ripping me apart for how I look or what they think they now about me. It's ridiculous!
Re: Octuplets mom
Sorry, I agree with the pp.
The big difference between the Duggar's and this woman is that the Duggar's make their own money to support all of their children and only recently got their own show on TLC. This woman has 14 children and NO job or income of any kind...and sounds like she sponges off her parents.
Also, I think it's a bit shady that a publicist was hired so fast and now she is expecting handouts from the community.
To be somewhat fair to this woman, I think that her doc's were extremely reckless when transferring that many eggs during her IVF process. IVF is a miracle for some people but that is abusing the system.
As for her graduating college or whatever, what kind of job is she going to get that she can support 14 kids on her own? This story just makes me wonder:
1. If she is mentally stable
2. What is going to happen to the first 6 children...I am seeing alot of issues.
3. When the fertility medicine field is going to start placing ethical regulations on how many eggs they transfer.
I am wondering if this may lead to more regulations in the field of fertility medicine. I'm not an expert on adoption, but from my understanding, there are VERY strict guidelines and criteria that a parent/couple must meet in order to be able to adopt a child. My guess is that a single mom, with 6 other kids, who is accepting government assistance and does not have her own home, would not be a candidate for adoption. But, she can go to a fertility doc and use donated sperm to bring babies into this world. It seems odd to me.
Are there criteria that must be met for a person to be allowed to go through IVF? I'm really not sure, but it seems like there should be. Not ones that would prevent most people from doing IVF, but just the ones where it is unnecessary. It almost seems as though this woman decided to have more babies SO THAT she could try to cash in on the "I have a ton of kids, let me write a book and have a TV show" industry. I'm probably being judgemental, but I think she deserves quite a bit of judgement from the world-at-large, since the taxpayer's money will be supporting her family.
I'm usually a lurker here, but as someone who has gone through IVF I wanted to address some of the statements above re: fertility treatment:
1) While not law, there ARE guidelines on how many embryos to transfer by the American Association for Reproductive Medicine - and any reputable RE is a member thereof. There is a lot of information out there about this woman's RE, and he is clearly criminal, and NOT a typical doctor, no regulation would have prevented him from doing what he (supposedly) did, because anyone would know how wrong it is and he did it nonetheless. He also has the worst success rates I've ever heard in IVF, further showing he is a real hack.
2) Even though she claims she did IVF for all of her children, something doesn't add up. See this blog post:?https://squarepegroundwhole.blogspot.com/2009/02/status-update-and-big-fat-liars.html. The octuplet mom is lying about many things. What, exactly, is unclear. But she's lying. It's quite possible she didn't really do IVF and just got drugs and used them incorrectly.
3) Every patient is responsible for her own fertility treatment, the doctor always gets input from the patient before transferring and deciding how many to transfer. Even before I did IVF I knew that you should never transfer more than the number you are willing to carry, unless you are willing to reduce. Also, it's EXTREMELY rare for any RE to transfer more than 2-3 (and in a patient the age of this mother, almost ALWAYS 2 unless she's had multiple failed cycles, which doesn't seem possible given the dates she claims she did IVF).
4) There aren't restrictions on who can get IVF because it's not like you walk into a doctor and ask for it. IVF is a very arduous, expensive and unpleasant process, recommended by a doctor as a treatment for a problem. If you are trying to get pregnant on your own and it doesn't work, the doctor will try a series of less invasive options and only move you to IVF if it is medically necessary, they don't just let people walk in off the street and say they want to do IVF. 99.99% of procedures are done ethically, and because one doctor and patient are psychotic, that shouldn't prevent other families from having children. No one who conceives at home has to go through psychiatric evaluation to have children, why should infertile couples? Because one woman and doctor were unethical? Regular REs wouldn't have treated this woman to begin with.
No, I don't think Suleman should be receiving death threats, but she did do something very wrong, whether in collusion with a horrible doctor or alone. This does not mean that there should be any changes to how or for whom fertility treatment is performed, however, because the normal system would never have permitted this situation.?
Sorry... I think what she has done is child abuse. ?I think from all the plastic surgery she's obviously had (she looks nothing like her old pictures) that she has some mental problems. ?
She totally accepts welfare and she lied about it. ?SSI and food stamps IS welfare. ?
The Duggars are not even comparable. ?
No one has any business having that many kids as a single person with no job especially when 3 of her kids at home have autism and developmental issues. ?
She's an idiot.
p.s. ?I also think that the fertility doc has a lot of explaining to do.?
