This bothers me- re: my Dr. appt today

I met my OB today, and I really really liked her. Se did an exam just to check my cervix and the first thing she said was "wow, I can see why you had a C section. You would never be able to deliver vaginally, your pelvis is incredibly narrow- it's very dangerous to you and baby"

So I asked her if this is something my old Dr's at St Luke should have noticed right away, and she said definitely. She said she would have nevr allowed me to consider delivering vaginally.

It just upsets me. I know it's in the past, but I had such a terrible delivery with Jackson- and to think it could have been prevented really bothers me. I realize what matters is that we are both healthy, but still... i just really went through alot in his delivery.....uggg, just another reason....

GUess I am just venting...

(side note:With Jackson's birth-  I was10 days late with no dilation or effacing whatsoever. I was induced, pushed for three hours, was overdrugged and eventually had a C section due to my pelvic being very narrow- he couldn't get through)

On another note. They scheduled me for a C section on 9/9/09. cool huh??

  • I think I would be bothered too even if it is one doc's opinion vs. another.  Sounds to me after you described  your experience with Jackson that she may be right.  At least you have a new doc that you connected well with.

I think your c/s date is pretty cool!!!!  That's a great day for a birthday (and definitely easy to remember!)

  • Wow. I would be upset too. But on a happy note that's exciting about the date Smile  On another note if it makes you feel any better my last OB/GYN told me I had the "smallest uterus she's ever seen." Not sure how I feel about that or how that will play into the whole having a baby thing.

  • Very cool due date!  I switched OB's after delivering Niko.  I hemhorraged and had an emergency C (as most of you know).  Anyway, my former OB said I "didn't bleed much.  It's normal."  My new OB and several others that I got opinions from said I could have died.  It sucks that I wasn't told the truth.  I feel you!

  • Ugh. I bet that was hard to hear. Thinking about how easy your first OB overlooked it, I'm happy you found an OB who took the time to consider that could be the case with a vaginal delivery. What an awesome birthday though!!! So what week in your pregnancy is your c/s scheduled for?
  • Very exciting about your c/s date!  What a wonderful day to have a birthday!

In all fairness to your previous OB, many of them will not suggest a c/s on a first birth by guessing that your pelvis is too small to allow the baby to pass easily.  There is no definitive test for that, and by suggesting it to patients, they quickly get the reputation for being Dr. Cuts-a-lot.  They don't like that.  It is very easy for a doc to look at you knowing that you have had difficulty leading to a c/s in the past and tell you that you can't possibly give birth vaginally.  If it is your first baby, all they can do is guess, but if you are hoping for a vag birth, most will at least let you try for it before ruling it out.  I really think that was what happened in your situation.  I know it sucks to have a traumatic birth experience.  I have had two of them myself.  I just thought it might bring a little comfort knowing that the events of your first birth might not have been anticipated for good reason.  I am glad your new OB is on top of it and ruling out vbac early based on your previous experience.
