Baby food question

When did you start giving the baby traditional hispanic baby food?  Does that make sense?  I've been giving Liev sweet potatoes, pears, green beans, squash, etc but he's not crazy about most stuff.  I also tried malanga on its own and he did not like it one bit. 

I'd like to star making the Cuban baby food but I don't know if it's too early to add garlic to it or just too early for that sort of thing.  I won't be adding meat til much later but I'd assume the other root vegetables are fine.

Did your baby like that food better?  If it makes a difference, I make all his food at home.

  • I'm not much help because I haven't even started Lynda on solids yet, but I was reading an article the other day that said it can take a while before children like certain foods.  It can take them tasting it up to 8 times before they might feel comfortable with the food.  The article went on to say after introducing it to them for 8 times and they still don't like it to just hold off for a while and their pallet might develop to like it better.  Supposedly babies have 30% more taste buds than adults and are very sensitive to taste.

  • I started at 6 months but Alexis never liked them.  I tried making her purees with different things, but she never developed a taste for them.

    Now that she eats "real" food - she eats all kinds of Cuban things.  Arroz con pollo, fricase (sp?), etc.

  • well we made it without the spices but slowly gave her one new food at a time (to test for allergy) then over time we started to add the garlic but never anything too spicy...still nothing too spicy.

  • You could try mixing some of the stuff you know he's not allergic to. Maybe he'd like the combo better. But I wouldn't go all out with full Cuban cooking until he's tested a couple more things. My MIL was dying to give Maia compota since the moment I said I was going to try solids, but we waited a bit just in case. A friend's baby had broken out in all sorts of rashes but she had no idea what the cause was cause she was giving her fully mixed up foods and didn't bother trying one at a time.

     Besides the possible allergies (which isn't too big a deal if no one in your family is allergic, but it's good to be careful) also consider that you might spend hours making him some amazing dish you swear he'll love and he might spit it at you just as quickly as you stick the spoon in his mouth. Make sure that whatever you're making you like to eat too. I made all sorts of fancy stews and things for Maia and most of them ended up on me.

    Although as for the last question, it turns out Maia really likes strongly flavored foods. The other day she even stuck a fry in my husband's spicy bbq dip, and other than her eyes watering a bit, she seemed to love it. She also prefers things you wouldn't expect, like for instance she loves pesto (I make it with spinach & basil) and when we went to an Italian restuarant and ordered her the kids' pasta with sauce she refused to eat it and had DHs risotto instead. It's hard to guess what they'll eat. Just keep trying.

  • I started with malanga for 3 days then added carrots to that for 3 days (for allergies) then sweet potatoe, green beans etc. Until he had tried each of them for 3 days but i would add the whole thing. Yes he does like that better then gerber food but again when mixed in.
