For those who don't know, Allison has some feeding issues. I try not to dwell on them much here since so many people (even on this board) have had to deal with much, much worse things. Basically, she gags or chokes anytime she eats anything much larger than a pea or harder than a Ritz cracker. We've had to give her the Heimlich twice and she was gagging on a daily basis until we cut out all harder foods. At this point we're not sure what is causing the issue, but the GI doctor thinks it's either a super sensitive gag reflex, a food allergy making her throat sensitive, or an extra flap of skin inside her throat.
This morning I took her for a swallow study. A doctor and speech therapist were going to watch her eat her lunch and take some x-rays of her swallowing. Allison totally freaked out the second we walked into the room. We tried to hold her down in the chair and feed her barium-tainted food. It didn't exactly go as planned. Allison just kept getting more and more worked up, and at one point knocked over the glass of milk we were trying to feed her. All four of us got covered with the stuff. Eventually we had to give up. They were able to sort of see two swallows and those looked fine, but Allison has never had a problem with liquids, anyway.
It was just a rough time. I felt so bad for Allison, and I didn't feel great for the two poor women my daughter coated with barium-tainted milk. I'm not sure the GI doctor is going to be able to make a plan of attack based on two swallows, but we'll see what he says. Allison cried the whole way to the car, and I cried myself for a little while in the car. It was just a rough appointment. Thanks for letting me vent.

Sounds like you guys had a rough time. You poor thing. Just hope they saw enough to figure something out. I certainly hope you don't have to buy pediasure for the rest of her life. LOL.
Are they going to try to retest? How will they know if its an allergy? I hope you get some answers fast. Porr Allison. Just take a deep breath and relax. Rest assured that she won't starve. Extra hugs go out to both of you.

Poor girl! Thats got to be tough on you and Allison! I wouldn't worry about writing worries on here... thats what we are all here for! Your problem is just as valid as the rest! I really hope they can get you answers so you can make some new progress, I'll be thinking of you!
I'm so sorry. Poor girl.
Charlotte's had to go through testing (nothing related to swallowing) and it's so hard to watch her be scared and hurt. It's probably one of the most heartbreaking things you have to do as parent. So big hugs to you.
I hope that the doc can figure out what is going on that they are able to easily treat her issues. Best of luck.
I'm so sorry you're going through that. It's so hard to know your child's frightened and not be able to make it better right that second. I hope you get some info fast. How scary to have done the Heimlich twice!
And please don't be afraid to talk about this here! Other people may have problems, but they don't make yours any less valid.

I am so sorry that you have to go through this. It's never fun and it never gets easier to see your child have to go through a test. They don't understand why your doing it and it's hard. I don't how many times I hear, you have it so much worse. I want to tell you that it's not true. Max's condition may be more complicated, but it's not any worse than yours. ANYTHING that your child has to go through is difficult on the parent whether it be a cold, swallowing complications or kidney failure. Going to Children's hospital for anything (don't know if that's where you went or not), but it's not fun. The people are wonderful, but it's not fun no matter how serious the problem. Please don't EVER feel that what your child is going through is less important than what someone else is going through, because it's not.
Had to get that out. I don't like hearing, "My child's cold is nothing compared to what you're going through though." Your child is just as important as mine and he/she deserves all of the attention he/she needs.
With that said, I really hope that they find something out soon for Allison. It's very scary that you have had to do the Heimlich on her. I will keep Allison, your DH and you in my prayers that you get some answers.

I'm sorry the appointment was difficult for you both! DD and I understand what you are going through. Her check-up at Children's was yesterday with her GI doc. It's never easy to see your child go through painful procedures.
I hope that you guys received good results soon, and that they continue to look proactively at Allison to help her with her swallowing concerns. I will keep you all in my thoughts!
