Infertility

Ever been told NOT to do IVF?

Went in for my WTF appt last night - CD14 - have 2 17 follies on right and 2 18 on left, some with echoes.  I was told with the quality of eggs/embryos I produced I "really didn't need IVF", but the next session will be an IVF.  He wants us to "try naturally now", and after BD'ng tomorrow I'm to use progesterone until day 2 of my cycle next time.

It was nice of him to tell me I "don't need IVF" with the quality of my eggs and embryos - but then, WTF did they start me on IVF?  He is still trying to push DE, but I don't want to be a part of that right now - I don't feel comfortable doing that - I would rather have my own DNA.  I'm still so confused over this whole process - I trust him more than the other two RE's I went to, but am still VERY nervous.

TIA.

Re: Ever been told NOT to do IVF?

  • So.... your RE says your egg quality is good, but yet wants you to move on to DE?  That seems odd.  What's his reasoning for that?  How can he say you don't need IVF, but then push for DE?  Sounds like he's talking out of both sides of his mouth.

  • It's what I thought last night - got me really irritated - he was also saying about the success stories he's had with women over 46 with high FSH, yadayadayada....I kept telling him - I don't have high FSH I am not over 46 and the scenarios he is telling me about have nothing to do with me - then he says if I'm absolutely NOT willing to do DE, then he would do a natural cycle this time and my last IVF next time - he also kept saying there wasn't any fragmentation or any problems, just that my uterus rejected it for some reason - I had emailed/asked them to do:

    Normal 0 Normal 0

    (*)Leukocyte Antibody Detection (LAD) test

    (*)Antiphospholipid Antibodies

    (*)Anti-Ovarian Antibodies test

    (*)Anti Nuclear Antibody Screen

    (*)Anti-Cardiolipin Antibody Test

    Antithyroglobulin test

    Day 3 Inhibin B Test

..but they wouldn't do some of them because by insurance (BC/BS-NJ) wouldn't cover some(*) of them...most of them -

He also said he would offer the Leukocyte Treatment during the next IVF cycle which assists the embryo in attaching, but it would be another $300 OOP.....he continued t say it is a soy bean extract that is injected into your uterus after ET?

WTF? - He WON'T do the test, but he'll offer the treatment?....AFTER I ASK FOR IT?

..maybe with all the research I should become an RE......this is SO frustrating that WE have to TELL THEM what we want - WTF can't they just do what needs to be done and be done with it?

    ....TIA...

  • PS: The %of successful DE's may be a bit higher, but with ONLY ONE IVF left - WTF would I waste it on a chance of someone else's DNA instead of mine?

...DH started a new job so we're on COBRA - at a rate of $1200/month - that REALLY  had him push for DE more..??...

  • Sounds like a very bizarre situation... I'd find a new RE.
  • Can't afford to - already been through lesser-quality RE's in NJ - I'm stuck....and F*KD.
  • which RE office are you going to if you don't mind me asking?
  • Now going to Cooper Medical Center - Dr. Check.

Have been through IVF NJ & Shore IVF - both DE pushers.

    Where do you go?

    This is SO frustrating.

Hey, make whatever choice you want, but, some of us have made that choice to go to DE and don't consider it "wasting" our insurance (and, in my case, I have TWO left on my insurance), so, you might want to choose your words more carefully.

  • I was not judging anyone for their choices - simply stating I don't personally choose to have someone else's DNA, and if I ony have one chance left, I would rather try with my own.

The %of live births are not that much higher with DE as opposed to own eggs in my case.  I don't have any medical problems, and all tests have come back with good results.  I have no blockages, no difficulties in any area other than not being able to carry - as far as I know.  The tests being offered have come through clean & clear - the tests over & above I have requested have been rejected, as "not being necessary".

The DE's, in my opinion, are for those with lower (or higher if be the case) test results and for those unable to ovulate, or produce eggs.

  • Unless you have done PGD or some other genetic testing on the embryos there is no way to determine quality - they may look "good" and not have much fragmentation but that isn't a real determination of quality - particularly when you are over 45.  Also, having low "numbers" does not reflect egg quality but rather quantity.

I have no desire to get into a debate with you.  All I'm saying is that "WTF would I waste it on a chance of someone else's DNA instead of mine" can come across as harsh words on a board where we should be sensitive to what everyone is going through.

I hope you find an RE that lives up to your expectations.

Well, take it for what it's worth but in my 4 IVFs at a tender 32-33, I've produced far more eggs and embryos, and have absolutely not one single thing "wrong" with me on paper.  My AFC is around 25, my FSH below 4.  Tubes and ute are perfect.  DH is the same.

And I'm using DE.  Do what you want - but be aware that just because there are no tests telling you your eggs are bad - your eggs could suck just as much as mine do.  Or not.

And yea, some sensitivity surrounding "wasting" an attempt with "someone else's" DNA would be nice, but somehow I won't hold my breath hoping you'll develop some.

  • ~Sorry for "taking my frustrations of this whole darn situation out on you DE'rs" if that's how it was taken - I was simply stating our outlook on the various RE's pushing them all the time - I'm not ready to give up hope.

DH & I bd'd 4 days before going back to my RE, and the BW showed I already O'd, so I'm HOPING something took - for whatever reason I am spotting tonight - Dr told me to start using crinone tonight and to use it once a day.  While I was there yesterday, he asked why the nurses had filled the Crinone and the suppositories...I had no idea.  He said they should already know that Crinone sticks like glue and the suppositories all run out - it was why he wanted the Crinone prescribed.  He asked me what I used, and I said the suppositories.  He said depending on the results of the bloodtest, he wanted me to start the crinone and get rid of the suppositories - glad he asked.

There is just so much confusion in his office, it doesn't make any sense.  The other RE's were a little more organized, but too pushy and unwilling to go with what the patient wanted.

I just hope we ALL get BFP's - after dealing with such unreal emotions & pressures for so long, I would HOPE God would see through to helping us bring miracles into this world.  It doesn't make any sense why he wouldn't.
