Moving to Michigan

We're moving to Michigan this summer. I've done a lot of research, and because I need multiple doctors Beaumont is looking like the best hospital. Does anyone have any complaints about that particular hospital? Thanks in advance :-)

Re: Moving to Michigan

  • Just wanted to say good luck with your move here. Another hospital to chack out is St. John's. I was born ay Boumont and my mother loved it. Maybe when you get here check both of them out by taking a tour. My friend just had her baby at St. John's and loved it. Both are really good hospital's. The best we have. You can't go wrong with either.
  • Thank you! I'm high risk so choosing a hospital isn't the easiest thing in the world. I will definitely check both of them out when we come up in a few weeks :-)

  • I don't know much about multiple births, but I am not a huge fan of Beaumont!!  My doctor works out of Providence and I have had a great experience with my first daughter and am having a similar experience with my second.  I really think it comes down to your doctor over the hospital as they are the ones you interact with more.  I will say my sister and girlfriend both felt really rushed at Beaumont with their kids, but everyone has a different experience!!  Best of luck with your move and the multiples!!

  • Where are you moving? There is an awesome hospital in Genesee County - Hurley Medical Center...great place for high risk pregnancies and children's center.

I got pregnant with PCOS after many years of IF! Thank you Lord! Lilypie Fourth Birthday tickers Lilypie First Birthday tickers

  • I guess I said that wrong, I'm not having multiples, i need a few doctors, such as a neurologist and cardiologist as well as the high risk ob and i was hoping to find them all in one place. Right now in PA i have dr's as far as 2.5 hours away and it's so inconvienient but its all i can get here. We are more than likely moving to the Livonia area.
  • I have a great neurologist but is not tied to a hospital.  There are about 20 docs in the practice and i am very happy with the treatment i have received.  I went to 3 different ones before I found him.  The practice is not too far from livonia.  It is in farmington hills.  it is called the MIND (michigan institue for neurological disorders).  They are specialized so it depends on what you need to see the doc for.  The phone number is 248-553-0010.  they are tied to several hospitals including beaumont, huron valley, bodsford, and a few others.  good luck.

  • Since your moving to Livonia I recommend Providence for sure, that's the hospital I belong to.   Also, my son just had surgery last year at St. Mary Mercy hospital in Livonia.  He received great care there and I have also heard great things about their maternity dept.  Maybe check that out too?   Good luck with your move, Livonia is a nice city to live in.
  • You might want to consider University of Michigan Hospital, especially if you are high risk - I think it is one of the best in the area and has a good NICU (just in case).  You should also be able to find any type of other doctors you need there,  There are usually consistently on US News and World Report's list of top hospitals as well.  I work there and I don't think I would go anywhere else.  Just my opinion though - best of luck!!
  • I'm going through Beaumont -- I stayed overnight at Royal Oak, and am delivering through Troy (I also took a couple classes at Troy) and have been very happy.  My family has had some bad experiences at St. John's, and you just don't hear enough about hospitals like St. Joe's or Crittenton to be comfortable with their capabilities.
  • Healthcare is really important to me so I guess I have a strong opinion on this:)

The only hospitals that I would trust for myself and family are Beaumont or UofM.  St. Johns has been up and coming as are a few others but the long standing of quality care in my opinion are the first two.

I have to say I disagree with the poster about the Dr. making the experience.  While I do like having a good connection with them as it's highly important.  I want to be at a hospital that can do all the services, test and procedures without sending me around town and I want physicians who have been trained in top tier institutions with continual education who can make competent split second decisions as the highest level and who have the tools they need at their fingertips.

I guess I just don't want to, "Test" out what has not been established yet.  I do feel that Beaumont and UofM have statistics to support what I write and the, "Majority" of people here I would say agree.

Especially anyone who has had multiple encounters with the hospitals and it's staff or is in the medical field themselves.

P.S. And remember Michigan's economy is at it's low and this includes the hospitals and their revenue.  Many of them are ramping up new facilities in hopes of attracting patients.  Just remember to look deeper than a new building.

Good Luck and WELCOME to Michigan!

    ?

I whole heartedly agree with this!! ?I am currently using the MFM doctors(high risk OB's) through Royal Oak Beaumont and love them!! And even if I was still living in Westland, I would have driven to beaumont to have this baby. ?And I do agree with U of M as well!! ?

My dad had a kidney transplant there and my husband was the donor. ?EVERYONE at that hospital is wonderful. ?I can't account for their labor and delivery area, but I would trust U of M in heartbeat if I was in Ann Arbor.?

    ?

    Good luck to you!!?

  • Welcome to MI!  I agree w/St. Mary Mercy in Livonia, I had my DD last March & they were wonderful.  Not sure if they would have all the doctors you need, but worth checking out.

  • GOOD LUCK WITH THE MOVE!!!!!

ALL OF MY DOCTORS ARE BEAUMONT DOCTORS AND I THINK THE HOSPITAL IS GREAT. MY OB IS JOANNE SANDLER-GOLDBERG SHE IS IN FARMINGTON HILLS AT 15 MILE AND ORCHARD LAKE, AND A GREAT CARDIOLOGIST IS NATHAN KERNER, HE IS IN SOUTHFIELD 12 MILE AND NORTHWESTERN HWY, IF ALSO THERE IS A NEUROLOGIST IN THE BUILDING AS WELL. IF YOU WANT I CAN GET YOU THEIR PHONE NUMBERS.

  • Hi JenG!

I can't help with the hospital recommendation but I wanted to say Hi because last year I also moved from PA to MI. I think you will like it hear as the states have much in common. Good luck with your move and your search for the hospital!

  • We were very happy with Beaumont.  I had some complications during my PG with pre-term labor and had many hospital visits and a few hospital stays.  I stayed at Royal Oak Beaumont for 5 days and was being seen by the high risk dr's there.  I also had some early genetic testing done by the high risk dr's. I was very pleased with their care and my experience at Royal Oak Beaumont.  I also had experience with Troy Beaumont.  I had a few hospital visits and two stays there while I was PG and then I delivered my son there and stayed for a few days.  Again, I had a good experience.  If I could not go to Beaumont, I would go to U of M.  Royal Oak Beaumont has more specialists and a NICU, Troy does not have a NICU.  I would also google around about hospital rankings for different specialties (neurology, cardiology, etc....).  I know that Henry Ford Hospital is ranked well for neurology and Royal Oak Beaumont has a good cardiology program including a Women's Heart Center.  Good luck with your move and welcome to MI!
  • Perhaps I am partial because I have worked at Beaumont (royal oak) for the last 6 years, but I have worked at 2 other big hospitals in the area.  Beaumont really is an excellent hospital.  There pediatric areas are  great already and they are constantly finding ways to improve them.  I deal with a lot of the peds areas with my job and I can tell you for sure that the NICU is very well staffed and trained.  Good luck!
  • I highly recommend Royal Oak Beaumont and have a great doctor in Famington Hills (not too far from Livonia).  I have several friends who have delivered at Beaumont and I plan to do the same in 8 months!

I'm in real estate too.  Can I answer any questions about the area?  I'd love to help!  Welcome to Michigan!

  • Just wanted to give my 2cents and recommend Dr. Winslow at Westside Ob/Gyn.  She does birthing at St. Mary Mercy Hospital, which is right in Livonia.  I love Beaumont, and there are many wonderful doctors there, but I think you would be better off finding a doctor and hospital that are closer to Livonia if that's where you plan on living.  Even more so since you are high risk, and every minute may count.  Good luck, and I hope you enjoy living in Michigan!
