1st Birthday Party help...

DH and I have started gathering ideas for DD's 1st birthday party, which will be held on March 28th. Surprise After much consideration, the party will be held at my IL's house, because it can accommodate more guests than our home. We have a nice deck and a backyard, but who knows what the weather will be like then, so we were afraid of people being crammed in the house. We are anticipating inviting around 25-30 of our family and friends.

For those mommies who have already planned their DD's 1st party, can you please give me some ideas for a theme (if you had one), and what foods besides cake/ice cream you offered? We were thinking a cake, and maybe cupcakes for some of my nieces/nephews who will be there, and possibly light appetizers/snacks. WDYT? We are creating a 1st bday DVD slideshow with music to play at the party as well. TIA!

Re: 1st Birthday Party help...

  • For all the kiddos parties (that have been at home and not out somewhere) we have served pretty much the serve the same stuff... We've not really done any themes.

veggies & dip (carrots, celery, broccoli, radishes, & ranch)

fruit & dip (strawberries, pineapple, etc with the cream cheese & fluff dip)

chips (just a big bowl - or pretzels)

cheese plate (little cubes of cheddar, gouda, havarti, etc)

lil' smokies or meatballs in bbq sauce (in the crockpot)

And if I want something more substantial to go with everything I'll do chicken salad & little rolls.

We always have pitchers of water and tea and softdrinks too.

All this stuff is so easy to prep the day before and then the day of you just put it all out on trays & bowls and leave it!

  • We had DS's birthday party in mid October and the weather was perfect.  We had about 40 people to our house, although our house is rather small as well.  We set up a big tent in the backyard with several tables and chairs.  We served several snacks like chips, chicken dip, spinach balls, hummus, salsa, and veggies. Then we BBQed chicken, burgers, and hot dogs.  We had mac n cheese, baked beans, and asian slaw salad to go with the food as well.

We had everyone over around 4 and ate dinner around 5. Cake was served around 6 and gifts immediately afterward.  It all took a lot longer than planned due to the number of people eating, but no one was in a rush and all had a blast.  Once it got dark, DH set up our firepit outside to keep those warm that were still outside.  We also had the birthday slideshow.  Ours was really long and it was on the TV on a continuous loop through the whole party so that everyone could see it.

There was really no theme.  But it was so much fun.  God luck.

  • Ava's b-day is in August so we had it at a park shelter with a playground.  Like you, we also didn't want to have 25+ people in our house.  I decided on a butterfly/garden theme only b/c I wanted to serve that dirt pie dessert, lol.  Also, because I liked these decorations (which we found cheaper at Party City):

We planned the party after her naptime, so it started at 3 p.m. and we did not specify an end time on the invite.  Since it was between lunch and dinner, we just served snacks - meatballs, cheeseball (with Pepperidge Farm butterfly shaped crackers :), deli spirals, etc.  We had a cooler of soft drinks, bottled water, iced tea, lemonade, etc.  Oh, and we had cute butterfly cupcakes!

  • Oh, I thought I would add that on her actual birthday (the party was the weekend after) we had a "cake smash party" with just our parents over our house.  We wanted to have something on her actual birthday and have the traditional cake smash fun, but didn't want to smash cake at the park shelter with nowhere to clean her off afterwards - so that's how we did that :)

  • Ditto Hannah&ben...we are having DS's this weekend and we are having cake & ice cream, chips & dip, fruit & dip, cheese & crackers, lil smokies in bbq sauce, and soda & water.  We are having it at our clubhouse due to having approx 45 people.  It is sooo much fun.  Sorry I am not much help for actual decorations since I have a boy :-)  I do know that you don't really need to go all out with decorations unless you want to.  Have fun planning!
Our kids are 19mths apart and we LOVE it!!

  • We only had about 15 people at Allison's party including the three of us, so we served lunch.  We bought BBQ (beef and chicken) from City Barbecue and served salad, pretzels, chips, carrots and dip, and cake and cupcakes.  Next time I think I'll just make BBQ in the crock pot, though.  We did a cupcake theme.

I made a cake using this cake pan:  https://tinyurl.com/bbs7ah.  I also made cupcakes.  I bought these dinner plates and napkins and then used plain pink and purple cake plates, cups, and utensils to keep things cheaper:  https://tinyurl.com/c4u25v.  I bought boxes at Michael's that hold four cupcakes, and we gave a box to each family as a favor.  Dollar Tree sells cupcake mylar balloons for--yep--$1 each.  Allison wore a onesie from Carters that had a cupcake on it.

I'll try to find some cake and balloon photos...
