Hysteroscopy question/vent

I am scheduled for a hysteroscopy in April to remove a uterine septum. Did those of you that have had this done, have recurrent miscarriages leading you to that point? It seems most everyone that had this done, suffered one or more miscarriages. I have never been able to conceive, and I feel like this procedure is jumping the gun a little bit. I kinda feel like I should find out the reason for not conceiving before I go under the knife. I realize the septum may end up being the reason, but I would think that surgery would be the last thing you would do. I'm probably looking in to this a little too much, but I'm reading risks and I'm freaking out a little. So, to sum it up, if you had this done, what brought you that point? Have you had any side effects (scar tissue, uterine rupture, etc ...)? Were you able to conceive relatively soon afterwards? Thanks for your input!

Re: Hysteroscopy question/vent

  • I had it done after a fibrioud was found at my HSG.  Before I had that done (my doctor didn't do it, got it after switching to an RE), I had two consecutive miscarriages after over a year of trying.

My fibroid led to the miscarriages (most likely) and b/c of the size, my doctor felt it had something to do with the TTC issues - it was so large there was not room for anything to implant.

I'm sorry that you have to go through it but it wasn't bad at all.  I would do it a million times over if it meant I didn't need to feel the pain of a miscarriage again. I'm surprised you have to wait so long. I don't know about the increased chances of conception after, this is our first month trying since the hysterscopy mid - January.

    Good luck!

  • I had the surgery in August.  I did not have a miscarriage prior to the surgery and have not gotten pregnant yet.  The RE gave me pretty low chances of maintaining a successful pregnancy with the size of my septum.  I figured I trusted him and he said it was a pretty minor procedure.  Turns out it went really well and was easy.  I even went into work the next day.  He feels everything went well - now he just needs me to respond well to the meds.

     Good luck!

  • I will find out if I have this on Wednesday, but my RE described it as the embryo trying to implant on berber carpet vs shag carpet.  It can last a little while, but it will never thrive.  I think it sounds like the right path if that is what you have.  GL.

  • I had an operative hysteroscopy in December to remove a septum.  It was an easy procedure and the recovery was only a couple days.  I haven't had any side effects or problems since, meaning scar tissue, etc. The septum was found when I had my HSG (after 2 failed IUIs).  I haven't had a miscarriage and the RE advised me that it was my decision to move forward with the hysteroscopy or not - as my septum was relatively small.  Personally I just didn't want to take any chances at all and if I could do something to possibly prevent a future miscarriage.  I feel like I would blame myself/lived in regret if I ever suffered a miscarriage and knew about the septum.  Also I believe some REs will not perform IVF with a uterine septum present and we may be headed for that route (after 1 more IUI).  It is a difficult decison to make as it is surgery (under a general anthesia) and there are a lot of things to consider. Good luck to you!

  • I think a hysteroscopy at this point to fix the septum sounds pretty reasonable. If you have questions or concerns, talk to your RE though...or you can always get a second opinion. You should definitely be comfortable with any decision before going through with anything.

    Good luck to you. :)
