TTC after 35

What is your 'cut off age' for TTC

This might have been asked before, but, at what age will you concider stopping TTC.  What is your reasoning?

Re: What is your 'cut off age' for TTC

  • I am about to turn 40 next month.  I know that people have children after 40 all the time now, but I am scared to keep trying much after 40.  I am interested in what others will say.

  • I don't want to give myself a "cut-off" date because I think that will stress me out.  I am 37 now and we just started TTC recently.  I would rather wait and see what happens.  If it takes a really long time, we will just see how we feel at that time.

  • I don't think I would stop until mid-forties maybe, at least for #1.  After that, I would have to see how age and chasing a young child took its toll on my body and mind!
  • We just started TTC in November, shortly after my 39th birthday. I told DH then I thought we should do everything we could to get pregnant this year, but that if it didn't happen by the time I was 40, I didn't think we should continue.

Now, two cycles in, I've totally changed my mind. If I do one day have to make a decision to stop, it won't be based on my age. It will be because a doctor has told me that it's physically impossible for us to conceive, or because I stop ovulating, or I just don't feel physically up to pregnancy anymore.

Another variant: I might decide at some point that my energy and focus would be better spent on adoption.

  • For me, 42. I hope to have 2 kids by then (fingers crossed).
Me: 44 DH: 42. DS born healthy at 40 weeks 8/24/09. TTC since then with no luck or ART. Surprise BFP 8/6/14... MMC @ 8 weeks 4 days... Miss you everyday sweet baby angel.
  • I haven't really thought about stopping at a certain age, but I am trying to get things done as quickly as possible.  I am 40, going on 41 in May. If I get a BFP this month with our first IVF and it's multiples - we're done! If it's a singleton, we may try for #2 right away, depending on how things go.

  • I HAD a "cut off" age of 38. I will be turning 40 in April. So much for a cut off date. Stick out tongue
  • I won't have a cut off. We may start the process for adoption if it looks bleak but we won't stop trying until they tell us there's no hope!
  • Quite honestly a cut-off date never occurred to me. I'd probably have a cut-off spending limit before I'd pick an arbitrary age.
Forty-something TTC since 12/2007 3 failed IVFs DE cycle #1: BFP then D&E at 12 weeks due to neural tube defect DE cycle #2: Chemical FET #1: BFN Lining issues, pursuing adoption
  • I don't have a cut off age; never really thought about it. My chart looks good for this month, so maybe I won't have to think about it.
  • I never set a cut-off age for myself, but I think after we conceive #2 that will be it.  I had always wanted 3 kids, but I think with 2 and going into my 40's (currently 38, will be 39 in June) it would be difficult to go for #3.  The early part of taking care of a newborn is very tiring, so to put more children on top of that would be what stops me.

  • I will be 38 in October, so I was hoping to get pregnant before my birthday and that would be it for me.  I don't know if I will continue TTC much later than 38.  That is just my preference at this point.  Of course, things could change. :)
  • 40 - exactly one year away since I turned 39 last week. My DH will be 42 then.  Really I don't think I want to push the increased risk and raising kids until we are almost 60.

What I may do though is instead of going back on the pill, I will just continue to not use BC and by the time I am 41, go back on the pill.  No more testing, RE visits, charting, etc.

  • Too scary to think about! ?I'll know when I get there, but I sure hope two babies find us before then!

  • The older I get the older my cutoff becomes - right now I'd say 41 since I'm 38 now...I'm sure that will change
  • I used to say 38 but now that I am 36 and still TTC #1, I know that ain't gonna happen. So I will just play it by ear. If I hit 40 and still don't have at least 1 child, I will probably keep on trying- though by then I will have exhausted most efforts I think.
  • I will be turning 41 this summer and I don't want to be trying in my mid-40s. While I'm sure God has his own plans, my cut off is end of summer.
  • Mine is 40. DH and I talked about it before getting married. He's got an 8 and 10 year old from his first marriage. It's easier saying it than doing it. I will have to learn to deal with just being the stepmom, and not birthing my own if nothing happens by 40. That gives us 2 more years (trying for 6 months so far). I figure I could use a career change if there is no baby!

  • I am turning 40 next month and will stop at 45 if no pregnancy by then
  • Like a few people said here, I don't have a particular age cut off in mind either. I am 38, we just started TTC, and though we would like 2..., who knows what the future holds. My mother had my brother at 45...he's 23. (I often think that may have influenced me not really thinking much about TTC earlier on, but again, who knows?!?!)

  • I will be 40 in May and for me the cut off will be  at 42
  • Hmm, never thought about having a particular age cutoff. ?I TTC actively for the first four years I was married, had plenty of diagnostic tests, some surgery, Clomid, etc. but nothing worked. ?I gave up when I was about 33 since 1) I was SICK of all the doctors and 2) figured that in order to be one of those women who got pregnant after "giving up" I'd have to give up. . .

Well, just giving up didn't get me pregnant either, but it's not like we were using birth control so I figured it would happen if it happened, whatever. ?But my husband started bugging me to give the fertility drugs "one more try" so I reluctantly agreed at age 36. ?Got preggo on the first cycle, much to my surprise, eagerly anticipating the birth.

Hopefully I'll be able to have another, I still haven't decided if I'll wait for it to happen naturally or try another IUI cycle. ??I'll see how having one child goes first!! ?My guess is that I wouldn't try fertility drugs or anything after 40, but I've known women who've gotten pregnant naturally later than that (age 47!!!), so it's not like I'll use birth control in the future. ?So I still count that as TTC, although it's a very laid-back way to go about it.

  • I never really thought about a cut-off age before either, but now that we've done some babysitting for friends and family, we see how much energy it takes to take care of kids, so I'm thinking we'll probably stop trying when I'm around 40 or 41.  Of course, we haven't started trying yet! We will start on our first anniversary...only 6 and a half weeks away! I'm 36, so we have some time.  We'd like two kids, but would be thrilled with at least one.
  • Early 40's.  My original date was 35 (i.e., if I don't have a husband and kids by 35, I won't do it at all).  Got married at 35, had 1st baby 3 days before I turned 36.  How's that for ironic self-fulfilling prophecy???  So now, I don't want to jinx myself.  I won't say a specific number, but I plan to be done before 45.  My sis had one at 43.  Best case scenario, I'll be done before then.
