Naps: CIO?

I need to get this child napping at a set time everyday.  As it stands, he just gets increasingly cranky until he passes out.  A friend told me to let him CIO.  What do you think?  I'm not sure I'm totally comfortable with this.

Re: Naps: CIO?

  • We did it and it was right for us. She is on a very consistent nap routine now and is always well-rested.

  • hmmm..maybe try it for 1-2 days and if it's not right for you, then quit?  I tried CIO and it definitely wasn't for me and my daughter would cry like a made woman and NOT sleep because she would be even more worked up.

How old is your baby?  I pretty much let DD nap in our bed and lay next to her.  Then I would just pat her and she would eventually fall asleep.  Then I put pillows all around her and watch my TV shows in the room while waiting for her to wake up. =)

  • We tried CIO once for naps - 90 minutes later she was still screaming.  My baby just doesn't have a personality that works with CIO.  Try it though, and see if it works for you, it certainly does work for a lot of people.  But if your mom-instinct is telling you it's not a good idea, there are some other things you can try.

Before our morning nap, we sing a few songs, read a book or two, then I lay down with her until she falls asleep.  Now, when we sit on the bed and the music starts, she knows what's coming and falls asleep much quicker than she did when we started the routine.  It definitely took a week or two, but being consistent with the timing and doing the same thing (song, book, laying down) really paid off.

Her afternoon nap is generally taken in the Moby while I do some housework, knit, or just watch TV.  The afternoon nap isn't so consistent because it all depends on what we've done during the morning, so I generally just putter around the house until she falls asleep, then I take some "me" time.  Having her in the Moby is nice too because I'm able to see when she's switching sleep cycles and can soothe her through the transition so she stays asleep longer.

  • Jenna and Kat,

I think your babies may still be a little young for CIO. The books say to hold off until like 4 months at least. Before then, they do not have the ability to soothe themselves, ( i believe that is the reasoning). Once they hit a certain age, their brains can teach them to soothe themselves, so that's how CIO works. You are teaching them how to comfort themselves enough to put themselves down to sleep....and subsequently, when they wake up in the middle of the night, like we all do, they can just roll over and go back to sleep (like grown ups do).

I'd hold off a month or so and try it again after researching it more (I think yalls babies are around 3 mos, right?)

  • I agree with MrsMGR regarding the age.  We didn't try CIO until our baby was 6-7 months old.  It did work very well for us and seemed to result in a baby who could put herself to sleep.  Obviously this is JMO but I wouldn't try it with any baby under four months old.

  • jenna- how old is your baby? most babies do not sleep on any kind of organized schedule until 3 mos. for some it's even the 6 mos mark.

also, you should **never** do anything that you are not comfortable with. people have many different ideas about what to do with your baby, but only you know what is right for your family.

my son would never be a candidate for CIO. a) i would never do it. when my child cries, i believe it is for a reason and i would never ignore that. b) one night when my DH was travelling i had reached the end of my rope and left him in his crib crying- for both our sakes. he cried so long and so hard, he puked all over the place. the only other time he was in a similar situation, he jumped out of the crib and landed on his face. note: he was not at crib jumping age. i still don't know how he propelled himself over the edge. sheer will is my only guess. he was 9 mos and a year (about) when these incidents happen.

CIO is often sold to people as a cure-all, but it DOES NOT work for 100% of kids. i have friends who have had splendid luck and others who suffered terrible guilt when it didn't work. so, again, you have to know what is right for you and how you are going to feel when you have one outcome or another. and, to reiterate, this will have a lot to do with the age of your baby.

i put my son down to nap. he likes to just hold my hand and he is out in about 15 minutes most days. somedays i struggle with it, but i also know it gives me 15 minutes to decompress and we can all use that time :)

  • Is he only 3 months old? ?I'd say he might still be a little young for a schedule. ?Some babies need more time. ?When Orion was ready I found the best way to ensure a consistent nap schedule was to set a consistent bed time schedule. ?Make sure he goes to bed and wakes up around the same time every day. ?Of course it helped that we both work and had to wake him up every day for daycare. ?Then he would get tired every day at the same time and it was easier to get him down. ?I think that helped tremendously. ?Though again, your DS could still be too young for a schedule.
  • M will actually be five months next week!  But I don't think her age factors in with CIO - like Truitt, I just think her personality isn't suited for it.

I know!  That's kind of insane, isn't it?  She's almost sitting up by herself too!

  • I've never done CIO for anything and I never will. It feels wrong to me. If you're not totally comfortable then I don't think you should do it.

I nursed DD to nap and to bed until she was over 8mo old. DH took over bedtime, but I continued to nurse to nap until she was over 14mo old.  It was a no-fail solution and easy for me so I saw no reason to give it up. But, she was on a "schedule" though it was really more of a routine. First nap was roughly 9-10 and 2nd nap was 1-2, with maybe another one later in the day.

At 16mo DD started going to nap laying in her big girl bed with just some humming/singing and keeping a hand on her. So it's not like if you don't do CIO that you'll never have a baby that goes to sleep without a big production.
