How do you spell cankles??

Seriously, just need to vent. I will never, ever allow myself to gain this much weight in any future possible pregnancies. I'm up 43 lbs and have 4 weeks to go. I am so swollen I feel like Violet Beauregarde in Willy Wonka, minus the blue tinge. My BP is always normal to low and I don't have any protein in urine or headaches, but the swelling is freaking me out! Hands, feet, ankles are all huge! Doc doesn't seem concerned, but in the last 3 days I've noticed the swelling doesn't even go down overnight. I'm waking up puffy! Anybody else experience this?

Blargh. I'm a water balloon!!

Re: How do you spell cankles??

  • I spell cankles p-r-e-g-n-a-n-t.

I can sympathize!  And for me it has nothing to do with weight gain - I gained a lot with my first pregnancy, but only have gained 15 pounds with this one (because I started out overweight) and let me tell you - the swelling has been pretty majestic with both pregnancies!  Hang in there.  Smile

  • Aw, it's OK!!  When I asked the dr what I could do about swelling/back pain he told me there is one fix - to have the baby!  It will go away soon after birth and you'll loose a ton of that weight right away.  I gained 53 lbs in my pregnancy and was down 30 of those a week after her birth, and 40 of those my 6 weeks PP.  I think that those of us who gain a ton, alot of it is water weight, b/c I gained so much right at the end.
  • I don't know if this actually works because (knock on wood) I haven't had much swelling (knocking on wood again), but my SIL did and she said that eating asparagus got rid of all of her swelling. If you're ok with asparagus, it might be worth a try!

(Also, thanks, now I'm going to have the phrase "Violet, you're turning violet, Violet!!" stuck in my head! :-) )

  • I can totally sympathize and not to scare you but it got worse after my c-section, they pumped me so full of epidural (baby's HR dropped to 30), it took literally 24 hrs before I could even move my lower body. I felt like my body was attached to tree trunks. but it was gone 1 week pp
  • Oh yeah, that was me at 36 weeks. I totally feel your pain! Out of nowhere I started retaining water like it was my job!  My ankles were so bad that I bought one of those foot spas and I just sat around with my ankles in there all night while I watched TV.  I gained 10 lbs in one week, which my Dr. chalked up to me taking in too much sodium.  She actually guessed what I'd had for dinner (pepperoni pizza) the night before based on how swollen I was.  Oh, and I gained around 60 lbs.  Yep, 60 lbs!  I regret that, especially since I'm still fighting to lose the last 15 lbs.

Luckily I didn't have to deal with the swelling for too long since DD was born just a little past 37 weeks.  My swelling went down pretty quickly and I was back to normal just shy of one week PP.

    Hang in there!

  • I hated how swollen I got and when I look back at the pictures from my baby shower I think even more how gross I looked.  For me I gained 40 lbs. throughout my pg and I lost it all within a week of giving birth.  It was by that week later that my feet looked completely normal again.

  • Get your feet UP! UP! UP!

I really don't know if it helps or not, but I sleep with two old flat-ish pillows under my feet every night...I have minimal if any swelling.

HTH...you are in the "home stretch"!

  • I haven't swelled yet this pg but last one was really awful as well.  I had one pair of shoes that I could wear for months.  My doc did say elevating your feet when at all possible could at least help but that there isn't much that will totally get rid of it.  I also agree with pp that it could get worse post-birth.  I had a c-section as well and my ankles became so swollen that I couldn't even really flex them for a week or so post-birth and any standing would just make it flare up again.

It eventually gets better, just try and and keep the feet up if possible.
