Pregnant after a Loss

Opinions on telling work you will be leaving after baby

Ok, I don't know if I will be working at my current employer after baby is born.  I'm working really hard to find a way to work part time and after mentioning this to my manager before I was pregnant she said that it's not possible here.  So if I do decide to go pt I have to find a new job.

That being said, it's still up in ther air on if we can do that or not.  DH said we can't elliminate my income but thinks that if I can work 24-30 hours a week we can handle that, (so about 3 days a week).

I really don't know when I will know what our plans are until much later.  Do you think this is something I need to tell them BEFORE I leave or tell them while I'm ON maternity leave.  If I tell them before hand they can find a replacement and I can train, if not than that is not an option.  If I tell them before hand and it doesn't work out that pt will be an option and I need FT work than I'm screwed.  Also a friend who is a coworker said she thinks I should come back for a month or so after my maternity leave so I don't burn any bridges and just tell them after the month I'll be leaving because this sin't working out.

If that's the case, I would have to sign up and put a deposit down for child care where as if I worked pt we "think" we could find somebody to watch the baby a few days a week.  But I seriously doubt we could find somebody to watch 5 days a week, even for a month.  Than I feel like we are wasting $$ on holding a daycare spot and that spot could have gone to somebody else who really needs it.

What do you think?  Any HR ppl out there who have recs?  (I mentioned this to my manager a botu a month ago knowing she is leaving the co. at the end of March, well before my EDD)

Re: Opinions on telling work you will be leaving after baby

  • I am in a very similar situation...I want to go pt after the babies are here, but don't know what will happen with DH's job (in construction)...I was not planning on mentioning this to my boss before maternity leave (and I don't think pt would be feasible for my department)...but I am choosing to wait it out and see and I will make a decision when the time comes to head back...Sorry my answer probably isn't much help...

    Good luck!

  • Just an FYI, if you decide to leave your job before you go on maternity leave or while you are on maternity leave, you will not get any paid maternity leave at all.  I think your friend's suggestion to go back for a month after your maternity leave is a smart one.

  • Since your plans are up in the air, I would probably not say anything until after your leave.  That way, you have the option of going back to your job if you can't find something part time right away.  You could also bring up the PT thing again after your leave is over, and I'm sure they will say no, but then you can say that's what is best for my family and end your employment with your current company.  With this economy, I wouldn't leave it to chance and let them know beforehand.

  • I'm not sure how maternity leave is covered where you are but in CA I'm given 4 weeks before & 6 weeks after for state disability and than am given an additional 6 weeks for paid family leave. So I will be out for a total of 4 months.

DH is also given 6 weeks so we are going to have him take a week off after the birth and than another 4-5 weeks off when I go back to work.

That way I can decide how many hours I feel comfortable working. I would be working full time when DH has the baby and than would step back if I want. If the state you live in also allows DH some time off than maybe he can use that time when you go back to work so that you can work that month and than figure out where you go from there. GL!

  • I am having the same dilema in some sorts. I think I plan on staying quite and  taking maternity leave (so that I can use my FMLA benefit) and returning back to work afterwords. I think on the day I return I will put in my 2 week notice. That way I get paid for the month and half I was gone, and I can still have time to train a replacement if that is what they want. I am hoping my MIL would be willing to watch baby for those 2 weeks I was at work.

This is the only plan I have thought out, thus far!

    Good luck!

  • I would suggest you look at your benefits/employee handbook to make sure you wouldn't owe the company anything if you leave shortly after your return.  For example, some employers have it set up so that if you are out on leave and then don't work for the same amount of time as your leave, they will require you to pay back any benefits they paid on your behalf.  That could be a serious financial blow - worth looking into!
