Big U/S question..?

Did any of you go for your big u/s and were told that your cord is not coiled or not coiled enough?  If so, what did they have to say about it?

  • Did they mean that there was only one umbilical artery, then it could appear to be less coiled.

The cord contained 2 arteries and one vein like normal; however, they thought it was not as coiled as it could be.

  • I will look it up in my OB/Pelvis ultrasound book and see if there is anything in there about it.
  • OK, first I am wondering who told you that the cord looked like it wasn't coiled enough?  Did the Dr talk about it and say that it was a problem.  But anyway, I looked up uncoiled cords and cords in general. I looked in "Ultrasonography in Obstetrics and Gynecology by Callen"  It says that coiling is thought to be do helical muscle layers within the umb arteries .  Coiling is thought to aid the the resistance to compression of the vessels.  The length and twist are also dependent on tensile forces placed on the cord by fetal movements.  Then it goes on  to talk about complete absence in coiling which occurs in 4% of fetuses and is associated with other anomalies. But that is for no coiling and not "not coiled enough".  Also, you had your ultrasound already so you would know if there were other things wrong.  SO I am sure that your baby is just fine.  I hope that this is helpful.

Thank you for the information.  This was just something I had never thought about until now.  The tech did the U/S and the neonatologist came in and did some more at the end.  The debate was whether it was coiled enough.  The U/S was a Level II b/c that was standard where I had mine done.  The neonatologist did say that it is not as coiled as it normally should be, but he thought it was OK.  So, I was just looking around for more research on the topic.
