  • I know some people skipped cereals all together and their children did fine on solids. We did all the cereals and never had a problem. I agree about mixing it with a fruit puree. When DD was younger we had to give her a little prune juice to help her but that was before she started solids.
  • I heard you should start with rice than go to oatmeal. Maybe that has something to do with it.

Nature's best has a whole grain mix cereal - maybe try that one.

  • dont go to rice - it will be worse!  we do oatmeal for the same reason.  the whole grain oatmeal does seem tohelp.

we were off cereal for about a month.  he just wouldnt eat it and he does fine.  cereal isn't the only way they learn to eat solids.  absolutely no reason to have a baby in pain!

  • my dd loves to eat...and she is doing really well with the oatmeal cereals except for the poops ofcourse. i will try the whole grain oatmeal and barley (heard that's suppose to help also) and mixing it with juice. thanks again!

  • We skipped it for this very reason (with pedi's rec too.) He's done just fine without it. FWIW she said bananas are binding too. So maybe avoid those until she gets used to digesting foods.
  • Oh we totally had this problem.  Now I give her one container of prunes a day (or other high fiber solid) and mix in 1/3 of the prune container with oatmeal cereal for her breakfast, the same for lunch, and then mix the remaining 1/3 of the prunes with veggies for dinner.  This worked out great for us.  After one really bad bout with constipation, we are really on the preventative mindset.
  • We never did any cereals/purees and DD eats solids just fine (everything we eat by 12 months except for the "no" foods).  We didn't do anything but BF until after she was 6 months old.  I think you'd be fine stopping cereal for a while.  I would think cereals would make constipation worse, not help with BMs.  Maybe give some diluted juice for BM and re-intro solids when she's a bit older.
