2nd Trimester

Does anyone else find that they simply cannot...

sleep a full night on their side?!  I am surrounded by pillows, yet somehow, inevitably, I end up on my back in the middle of the night...and who knows how many hours I've been sleeping like that.  DH reminded me that for who knows how many centuries women weren't told about blood restriction to the fetus, but I still can't help but feel like a guilty mommy.

Anyone else relate/have a bright idea for me?  I'm afraid that even if I buy a pg pillow, I'll somehow figure out a way to still sleep on my back.

  • you are not alone!!!  laying on my back feels SO GOOD....but I wake up every hour to pee anyway, so I don't worry.

  • There's been a few times where I wake up and i'm on my back.  For some reason I wouldn't do that before because it felt so uncomfortable but now it's not, I think that's why I've been doing it.  I just turn back to my side.

    So I'm guilty too!

  • I always wake up on my back!  I never sleep a whole night on my side, let alone left side.

  • I wake up on my back periodically and even when we watch tv in bed, I'm on my back for a bit. There's no stopping it, I've just come to that conclusion. One of the girls on third tri woke up on her belly this morning. It happens and I'm sure everything is good. Do the best you can and whenever you wake up just roll back onto your side. Know that you're doing everything you can to be a good mom and keep that in mind for the next 60 years or so. :O)?
  • I have the same issues...and it kills me to lay on my back, physically...yet I still somehow wake up like that. Sucks. I've found that if I use a pillow where my tummy is and lean on it (so you're kinda diagonal, your legs aren't stacked), instead of putting full weight on my side, it doesn't happen as often.
  • I couldn't stand sleeping on my back pre pregnancy, but now that is the only position that seems comfortable. I feel guilty, but I just get so sore sleeping on my side.
  • I sleep on my back alot!! try getting one of those wedge pillows...

  • I cant sleep on my left side bc my hip hurts sooo bad. I cant sleep on my right because it seems to irritate the baby and he starts kicking until I move. So I have to sleep on my back for a little while. Im up every 2 hours tho..atleast.
  • Ditto.... Laying on either side for a long period of time at night makes my hips hurt :(... but I guess if it's for the good of the baby right LOL...  I guess just try and use as many pillows as you can.... DH also makes a really good pillow to lay back on too :) .....
  • I really wouldn't worry about sleeping on your back.  Your body will tell you when that's not good for you or the baby.  If it doesn't hurt at all, then I think you're fine.  From what I understand, the danger is more restricting blood flow to you, not the baby.

  • So good to know that I am not alone!  Thanks for the tips!
  • I do find it easier to sleep on my side if I'm on the couch... or if I ask DH to cuddle up super close to me so I can't move. But then of course, I feel suffocated. Can't win.

  • I use a pregnancy pillow and still wake up on my back and even my stomach sometimes.  I try to use pillows to position myself but there is no telling what happens once I am actually asleep.  I just do the best I can and try not to worry about it too much.

  • There's really nothing wrong with sleeping on your back (at least, unti lthe 7 month or so).

If it helps, I fall asleep on my side with pillows on either side of me; when I do wake up and have shifted to my back, I've got the pillows to prop me up a little so that I'm still lying at an angle.

  • No way... your body will wake you up if you're doing damage to yourself or your baby. I slept on my belly until 20 weeks, and still wake up in all kinds of positions. Don't stress over it...
  • I can't do it either, I move positions and it kills my back.  I am doing the same things you are without success.  Sorry I am no help.
  • You've got to get a Snoogle!  I'm a back sleeper and my hips have been killing me since week 11.  I bought the Snoogle pregancy pillow a few days ago and I love it.  It keeps me on my side and you can put part of it between your legs to help with hip pain.  I'm a huge fan!
  • It's really fine. If you wake up and notice just turn over again.

I have a gigantic PG pillow and I still wake up sometimes on my back.

  • Sleep in whatever position is comfortable! Your body will tell you when you need to stop sleeping on your back. I slept on my back with DS until I was 31 weeks. When it was time to stop, I KNEW.  I felt lightheaded, couldn't breathe well, etc. When it's not comfortable you will automatically stop with no problems.
