Was this a mistake?

DS1 is getting benadryl to dry up his runny nose so he doesn't have so much drainage which we all (pedi included) think caused him to barf the other day.

We gave it to him right before bed.  He seems restless in there and it's been 2 hours that he's been down for the night.  He hasn't cried/spoken but just seems to be tossing and turning.  Perhaps we shouldn't dose him right before bed?

Re: Was this a mistake?

  • he might have the adverse reaction to it.

    DS1 has that.

  • Some kids get hyper on benadryl, some pass out for hours. ?I'd only do it daytime from now on. ?
  • Is he asleep, but just tossing and turning?  I do that when I am sick.  The stuff gets in one side of my head, then I turn over and it moves to the other side.

Hope he is feeling better soon!

  • It might make him hyperactive. Some children experience that. We give Benedryl to my children every night for their allergies. They have indoor allergies that really worsen at night(because they lay flat). We've never had that problem, thankfully. I *do* have to make sure they have a cup of water in bed with them because it really dries their throats up, too, and they'll awaken in the middle of the night otherwise. Could he be thirsty?

  • I'm one of those people with a bad reaction to benedryl.  I get super high and see trails and my whole face goes numb...

I'm not sure what symptoms he could be having but it will subside in 6-8 hours regardless :)  Hopefully he'll sleep through and you can figure out if you need to give it to him tomorrow or not.

  • I am pretty sure he's asleep but just moving around.  Though, it did take him awhile to fall asleep - 30 or 45 mins.  I can tell that much because he tends to talk to himself or sing (kinda cute actually).  And I don't think he's thirsty, at least not yet, because if he is he'll actually wake up and say "waaaaah, waaaah" for water.

I hope he STTN, that's for sure!
