Toddlers: 24 Months+

For those who have/begun potty training

DD has been interested in the potty for a while now.  She has been pooping in there for a month or more.  (We run to it when we see her grunting.)  For the past week or two, she's peeing in the potty 5 or more times a day and staying dry between many of the potty times.  YAY

My questions:

What do you do when you're running errands?  I am thinking of buying a folding potty topper.

DD's been a little off today.  Twice she would not pee on the potty and peed right after we got her off (but before the diaper was back on!) and twice she's peed as I was taking her clothes off.  What do you do to prevent that?

  • wow that is awesome.  we are no where close.  Olivia is a stealth pooper.  I can never tell when she is doing it.
  • I haven't tried it yet, but we have the folding Sesame Street one. It folds easily and it's easy to fit in my bag. For the other issue, I wish I had tips. DD peed on the floor after not wanting to use the potty. I figure she's still learning what it feels like to have to go, so we'll just keep practicing!

  • Ha!  Stealth.

DD's eye lids turn all red and she gets really still.  Hilarious.

It's totally her being ready, not us pushing...but now that I know she's able to I want to help her proceed, ya know?

  • There is a padded folded potty topper which looks useful.  I have the hard plastic folded one.  We HATE it.  Gah.  I just take her potty insert ring from home... It's kind of a pain, but worked for quite  a while.

But honestly, she hasn't been loving that one while out either lately.  Sigh.  HOWEVER, I have a new trick.   I make sure the seat is clean and dry.  *I* sit down with my pants still on, and I put my hands under her knees and hold her up with my forearms.   She's in a seated position between my knees.  And she's touching nothing cold...  just me.  And she goes.  DH hasn't tried this with her in a public bathroom yet, but I've been successful.

As far as her peeing on you while you are taking her clothes off...  this is probably actually a *good* sign.  Her instincts to not eliminate in her pants/diaper are kicking in once again.  Just keep talking to her.  When you're changing her, tell her if she needs to pee she just needs to let you know.  (I'm guessing she's cueing you clearly by now.)

Sounds like things are going great.  Don't let a slightly 'off' day like today discourage you.  GL

Thanks.  I will probably have many more questions for you!

  • I check in a couple of times a day, would be happy to help.  :)

  • That is great. My DD is potty trained and unfortunately when you are in public she will have to go alot.  I can't imagine having to take a potty everywhere.  We just use the public, I bring lots of wipes and sanitizer to wipe down, try to lay toilet paper.  As she has become good at going potty, i try to think before we run out or ask if we are somewhere that is more clean.  Potty training is the hardest in public.
  • We keep her in underwear when we're out, and bring the regular potty seat with us (it's Circo brand from Target, I think?).  We bought a folding one at BRU and everyone on here was right: they suck. The ones with hinges pinch their little booties sometimes, and the one with rubber "hinges" fall right into the toilet when she sits on it, because it's too flexible/flimsy.
  • We used to be able to hold dd over a public toilet, but then she stopped liking that. I went to BRU and got her a seat called a "Potette Plus". It's a little big, but it is contoured and the handles fold in, so not too bad. It fits in my Skip*Hop diaper bag with diapers and a few other things, so it small enough.

I try to use the bathrooms in Baby Gap when I'm at the mall. They have a toilet and changing table (and frequently a chair to nurse in) all in the same room, so it's super convenient. I hate when I take dd at Target or other places, and undress her on the changing table, carry her naked butt to the bathroom, set everything up (with people staring at me), then leave the stall with her naked bottom and frequently need to wait for the changing table to get her diaper back on. It's a hassle. I love Baby Gap :)

MoroccoJade definitley knows more than I do, but I'm also happy to help whenever I can!

  • I am just really starting this and we use a folding hard potty cover thing that my sister had gotten years ago and my DD loves it and always wants to carry it around with her when we are out.  She went with no issue at Target yesterday.  I have her in pull-ups still (not going enough to move to diapers).  My funny story was last night for dinner, we were at a restaurant that my neighbor owns and we were on the early side so not a ton of others there yet.  DD told me she to go so we grabbed the seat and ran.  She didn't make it but I had not grabbed my purse.  I wiped her up with a wet paper towel and then she walked out to the table - holding her dress way up with her naked bottom for all to see.  A huge group has come in while we were in the bathroom.
