Jordan Hospital, Plymouth MA - Anyone give birth here?!

I'm originally from Cape Cod and many of my friends have given birth at Cape Cod Hospital and been very satisfied with the care there.

However, I live in Bourne and work in Plymouth. My doctor is in Sandwich and is associated with Jordan Hospital. So it looks like I have to give birth there - unless I switch doctors, which I don't want to do at this point.

Here's the problem - I've been hearing nothing but negative things about Jordan. A colleague of mine actually died in child birth there... they brought her back, but it's just scary considering all the other negative impressions I'm getting.

Has anyone given birth at Jordan? What was your experience like? Anyone with a good experience? A horror story?

    1st Congrats!!

I have lived on the South Shore my whole life and I do not know anyone who has delivered at Jordan. Everyone delivers at South Shore Hospital or Boston.

Jordan has never had a great reputation for anything, not just their birthing unit.  I do think they're trying to change that though.  I personally would not deliver at Jordan.  I delivered my daughter at South Shore.

I would make sure there is at least a level II nursery at Jordan and an onstaff Neonatologist.  If there was ever a problem with your baby they would send him/her to Children's but the baby would need to be in the NICU until you could get him/her into Boston so that is a huge must.  As far as your care, that is a trust you have to have in your doctor.

Have you voiced your concers with your OB?

Good luck with your decision!  It's always a hard one.

    Hi -

I am expecting #2 right and will be delivering again at Jordan. Jordan was a wonderful experience for me. It was not perfect but I suspect no matter where you go there's always going to be something that needs improvement. I had a a midwife who was with me almost the entire 12 hours out of a 24 hour labor. I liked that it was close to home and that my daughter's pediatrician was close by too (I live about 5 minutes away from hospital/pediatrician's office). The pediatrician was at our bedside only 5 hours after the birth to meet us and check on her. The breastfeeding specialist was also very good though I should have utilized her more in retrospect. I also loved my birth class which was small and it really helped to bond with others going through it the first time. We even met up after everyone had their babies. One more thing, I gave birth right in the room that I was staying in. Small detail but I liked not have to move to a birthing room and was able to get comfortable in one place. Good luck with your decision.

Hey, I'm planning to deliver at Jordan. I would like to do a waterbirth... But I have heard really good things about Jordan. I assisted in my cousin's first birth. Everything went smoothly and the nurses were really nice. We stayed in the same room for the delivery... and the atmosphere was just low key and calming. She delivered her second child there as well, with no major complaints. So I confidently look forward to going there. I go to Pilgrim Shores, and I've been seeing Dr. James and Katie. I wouldn't worry about it the negative comments so much, as long as you feel confident with your doctors/midwife, have a birth plan, but still leave your mind open to things not going as you may have planned I think Jordan's is a great place to bring a baby into the world!

I delivered both my babies at Jordan and had a great experience both times.  I think a lot of it depends on your doctor.  They have a neonatologist on staff there.  When my son was born there were some complications (would have been the case regardless of where I delivered) and they had him in a hospital on his way to NEMC in no time.

Ten years ago when I found out I was diabetic I was brought to the Jordan ER and the ER doctor there saved my life, and the other doctors there were faboulous as well.  If I were going to have another child I wouldn't have any hesitation about going back to Jordan.  I know a lot of people that have delivered there and had a lot of great things to say about it.

I had my son there last December and they were wonderful. I spent nine days in the hospital because of preclampsia. During my delivery I had the doctor, midwife and nurse the whole six hours it took me to push and deliver. The nurses were great and the pediatrician was in the room when my son was born. I am trying to conceive and plan to deliver there again.

Hi there. Don't know any one personally who gave birth there. Our doctor (dr. Griever Jordan Health and Wellness) is out of this hospital and I will go where ever he is. I trust him with myself and my body. I do know that my boyfriends 86 year old grandmother goes to Jordan Hospital. When she was just there over the summer in the E.R. the care was exceptional. There was a gentleman walking around (he was a public affairs worker) offering the waiting families drinks, snacks, etc. Nana never wants to leave the hospital when she is there because of the care she receives there and also the quality of the food. I have no qualms about driving from Taunton to Plymouth whatsoever. Personally I would rather drive the half hour to Jordan then go around the corner to Morton Hospital.

I just gave birth at Jordan the end of last year & I had a wonderful experience. I was in labor for 2 days & ended up having a c-section. I can't say enough about the wonderful nurse staff there. The only trouble I had was that since the weekend I gave birth it was extremely busy, we ended up having to move upstairs to the peds unit for the last 2 days in order to free up a room. It is unfortunate that the birth place isn't bigger but otherwise I had a great experience.
