Any ideas are welcomed. I was thinking soup and sandwiches, but my mother thinks more of a hot meal is necessary (aside from just soup). Would brunch be better? Time of shower is noon. TIA
I don't think you need more of a hot meal for a shower (especially at noon). I would definitely add some sides, though. Maybe fruit, veggies, and some type of salad. Oh, and a cake, of course.
How many people will be attending? Where is it being held (someone's home, a hall)?
unless it's a super formal shower, no one expects anything overly fancy food-wise - I think what RockCandy said above is true, just add some sides and such, finger type foods and it'll be fine.
Don't know what you'll think about this but...my MIL makes this great crockpot shredded chicken. I think she puts chicken broth, salt and pep in it and lets it cook for a while. Its nice b/c the guest dish it out themselves onto a bun so it stays hot the entire time in the crockpot..??
I went to a winter baby shower once where the hosts made big pots of 2 different kinds of soup (Chicken Noodle and Broccoli Cheese I think) and then had sourdough bread bowls for everyone. I had never had something like that at a shower before (typically it was the girly typical shower foods) and I thought it was awesome. I loved the breadbowl idea. They also had a few appetizers and cake.
What people expect at parties varies by region... where I live it's almost always a meal and many showers are held at restaurants.
You can just do something easy like a tray of pasta and some eggplant parm. I really liked the pp's chili with fixings idea too. I did a chili buffet for a party last year and it went over well. I served the chili right out of the crockpot.

My mom is throwing me a tea, around 1pm. There will be lots of sandwiches, scones, some salads, etc. We decided we didn't need one big hot dish. I n my experience, women like to pick on a bunch of things at a shower.
I also live in Upstate NY.. and this time of year, anything warm will be comforting and appreciated! Soups & sandwiches would sound good to me as a guest!
well i think it just depends on what you like, and what the theme is, if there is one, i love the idea of brunch, because you can do like a breakfast quiche, you can do a fruit something, like ambrosia, you can do some kind of cinnamon roll something, you can do some kind of sandwich, like peanut butter, banannas and honey, or like tomato, moz, and bacon, and you can do alot with drinks, like coffees, mimosas, you can even do a cold spinach dip in a bread bowl.....

Soup in breadbowls!

How about a chili bar with all the fixins? Warm and comforting, plus I don't know anyone who doesn't like chili.
I really don't think people are expecting a full meal at a baby shower, though.
Listen to your mom - she knows.
