Pumping - is it supposed to take this long?

Sometimes it takes 45 mins for my milk to stop.  Is it supposed to take this long?? Could it be the pump?? Any other suggestions?  I thought it should only take about 20 minutes.

  • What kind of pump do you have? How often do you pump? How long have you been pumping? (not time but how many days/weeks)

Medela PISA (but is about 4 years old) I pump 2X a day (when DS is at daycare) and I try to do it every 3 hours 5 days a week.

  • Hmm, I would say that it shouldn't take that long. I had to pump for like 2 months when DD had latch problems and it didn't take that long. I even had a single pump that was only designed for occasional pumping. My BFF pumps a few times a day and has been for months and months and she has the same pump, she is done within 15 mins of less. Maybe it's because the pump is older? Do you get lots and lots of milk or is it just kinda coming out slow?
  • I just got 10oz after about 45 mins. I read that when you are pumping in place of a feeding then you should pump until the milk stops coming out. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. I know that I can't continue to spend 45 mins every 3 hours pumping while I'm working.

  • I would say check your pump parts.  Maybe that would make it more efficient and get the milk out more quickly.
  • Ditto to the pp. CHeck the parts or maybe even replace the replacable ones. Gotta help at least a lil bit.
  • I agree with PP's and I would say no more than 20 minutes.

  • Hi, it takes me a LONG time.  I have been pumping for over 6 months and have a NEW pump and I have to go at least 25 minutes, sometimes up to 40 -45 (when I am engorged) to empty my breasts ( with compressions the whole time ).  I think some women do not fit into the 15-20 minutes that we hear so much about.  It does stink, but you aren't alone.
